I am, but the fashion seems to be opposite It's curious to observe the demographics of crowds these days especially in the Premier League. All of the London clubs field teams which are predominantly black or mulatto - the Crystal Palace v Arsenal match last night started with 13 non-white players - but the crowds are still overwhelmingly white.
A very strange phenomenon.
Maybe nobody cares if their players are black . But as football fans we are loyal to our clubs regardless of how the teams have evovled over the years . The game itself has become more athletic and the best athletes for football are black . Those who have a problem with that are long gone , the rest of us just go to the game and support the team . As for Greenwood hes just a stupid kid who couldn't deal with the fact his girl had a say in their relationship . He thought because he had made the Utd and England teams he could do as he liked with regard women demanding sex as he pleased without a thought for what she wanted . He is /was the sort of kid any parents would hate their daughters to get tied up with . It would seem that relationship has healed to some extent , there is now I believe a child in the mix so its no suprise charges have been dropped . Lets hope for all concerned he has grown up and the responsability of being a father gives him a focus he was obviously lacking in his past. If he is now in a happy family unit why would anyone not wish him and his family all the best for the future ? That its away from Manure and probably in another country is niether here nor there . |

@orac: the 'home town' aspect of football clubs is of course their raison d'être in the first place. It's why we have Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday for example, rather the Don Valley Chiefs or the Steel City Typhoons. Mind you with so many English clubs now coming under American ownership, or other foreign ownerships which admire the American way of doing things, there is constant pressure to adopt a mindset that football clubs no longer need to be associated with a specific location but are instead portable franchises that can be relocated anywhere in pursuit of maximising revenues and profits. That sort of thing happens routinely in American sports business. It's a bit surprising that Manchester United have not already been relocated to London and renamed the MU Glazerballs or some such. I'm sure the Glazers would be able to a deal with their co-religionists Levy and Lewis for a shared tenancy of the TH Stadium (no longer associated with White Hart Lane note) and can then flog off OT for a shopping mall or theme park, with luxury apartments included natch. Pretty much true and apologies for the initial interrogation but United do have a reputation for a loyal following from anywhere but Manchester. Keane summed it up years ago and his prawn cocktail comments and football is now less about the once local fan base tribal though it was but it made it what counted to the local people. It is now in many respects showbiz with salaries that reflect that,the premier league is a closed shop where rules are made to ensure some cannot fail and then the super league was dreamed up much to the annoyance of what’s left of the grassroots. The non prem league now offers what was once local football probably more so the lower the league. |

I did and as a long time United club member it was appalling they even contemplated restoring him to the team and would have torn it up if they had. We'll never know why Hayley Robson withdrew her testimony and went back to him but I have to figure a share of his £75k a week salary (they are still paying) played a big part. |

Charges being dropped does make him innocent just that the evidence was not strong enough to convict. the problem there is on the various social media gloatfests describing his expulsion, several of tbe underlying stories state categorically charges were dropped NOT because of there being insufficient evidence to convict, but because police investigations brought new evidence and new witness testimony to the fore which made it clear the charges could not stand. Now i don’t know who this bloke is or what he is now been shown not to have done but it certainly seems one is guilty despite the police stating new evidence led to them dropping charges. |
