Unless you've spent the last week in a cave on Ultima Thule it can't have escaped your attention that 21 year-old forward Mason Greenwood, once considered a jewel in the crown at Old Trafford has been told to pursue his footall career elsewhere.
Although all charges were dropped against him last year the club's internal investigation has found that it would be counter-productive for his to resume playing for United.
In reaching this conclusion they are said to have consulted 'widely', but especially with members of the female club. According to the Times,
"He will not be missed by the vast majority of the women’s team, who, as The Times reported six months ago, were opposed to his return. The men’s and women’s teams share a training base and they (the women's team) were uncomfortable with the idea of Greenwood returning.
Richard Arnold, the club’s chief executive, held a meeting on Monday with senior representatives of the women’s squad, who were informed of his decision. The other players in the squad, including United’s three World Cup finalists, were also told before they flew home from Australia."
And then there were a number of demonstrations by female fans, all well covered by the media.
So what the hell's it got to do with them. They've got their own club, deeply subsidised by the 'parent' club, after a protracted media campaign with a distinct tinge of blackmail about it.
Mason Greenwood is a £100 million asset and potential England star, who has obviously made some mistakes. Why should the club throw all this away just because a few screeching harpies demand it.

Yes. Is this Twenty Questions? I find so many avid supporters of Manchester United aren’t,have never been near the place and don’t even know it’s not in Manchester

I though the modern model of football support was that a fan 'self identified' regardless of geography
Where you really come from is a social construct.

Yes. Is this Twenty Questions? I find so many avid supporters of Manchester United aren’t,have never been near the place and don’t even know it’s not in Manchester Many long-term supporters distanced themselves when the Glazers took over, and have stayed away from Old Trafford or providing any financial support, as I have.
Their places have been taken by glory-hunters typically from the Home Counties or the Far East. You'll often see the first few rows occupied these days by Chinese or subcontinentals who the TV cameras often dwell on. But I'm pretty sure that the majority of the crowd still consists of locals. Especially since many of the glory hunters have now migrated over to City.
You never see this lot these days although they were almost never out of camera shot during the Fergie days.

You mean they follow the success and in this case ie Manchester United know nothing about Manchester and have never been there. I thought you were a critic of people identifying as this or that.

Well many disappeared when Fergie did having fallen out of love with football which translates as they weren’t winning anymore.

Many of those who drifted away were also shareholders who were blackmailed by the Glazers into selling them their shares, as I was. 'Sell them now or you can paper your WC with them later' was the message at the time.
When these vultures have gone I'm sure that many real supporters will end up drifting back.

I thought you were a critic of people identifying as this or that. I am, but the fashion seems to be opposite It's curious to observe the demographics of crowds these days especially in the Premier League. All of the London clubs field teams which are predominantly black or mulatto - the Crystal Palace v Arsenal match last night started with 13 non-white players - but the crowds are still overwhelmingly white.
A very strange phenomenon.
