Doesn’t the economy depend on building and buying new stuff? Totally agree that the cost of living crisis is a barrier, but doesn't doing nothing lead to stagnation? A healthy economy depends on many things, but few are as important as affordable and reliable energy. If industry cant rely on affordable energy it will close or relocate. A good example is BASF the largest chemical company in the world who recently announced that as a direct result of high energy costs they are relocating from Germany to China, a coal based economy. The writing is on the wall. Well said. I recall mentioning BASF a while back. I get my news in advance of the BBC from the China end!

OK, man did not invent fire, man learned to start fires and use them. In any case, Sweden seem to have abandoned the idea that all electricity production can come from renewables. They are going to base their power production on nuclear plants, supplemented by renewables. Perhaps this is the way the Tories can spin the changes away from unreliable renewables. It would be interesting to know how many intelligent people actually support "Net Zero", which as a policy, seems to be doomed. Sometimes I include these things just to piss the pedants off. It separates the men for the boys. The pedant fiddled with the punctuation on the titanic menu whilst not paying attention to what is important.
Fire has always been around, but man invented the technique of getting it started, which we suppose was either sparking flints or rubbing a couple of dry sticks together. It was a big step in evolution. The animals have still not made it this far.

It is the second largest economy in the world. I also talk about the US a lot which is the first. I'm starting to learn about what goes on in Japan and Korea as well. I'll let you know if i find anything out. Europe is fucked so what is there to say. Learn from those who do it right.

You think 1.3 million (As at 2021) Uygers in internment camps is OK? You think China's social credit system is OK? You think 1.5 billion people denied democracy is OK? You think 200 million living in poverty (c13% of the population) is OK? You think forcibly relocating 1.3 million people to make way for a dam is OK? etc etc, BvL, you really need to wise up on China.

They fascinate me, but it is more the culture I like. They are really pleasant people if you take the time to communicate and find out. One thing I know for sure is those that live there see the government as beneficial. there is not the us and them vibe of those country, which I'm sick of listening to. I just like to venture into new pastures. China is not the only culture i have studied, but I get bored hearing the same old crap repeated again and again. Like ten or so years go I was into Malta and finding all of what goes on in that culture. That's interesting and I made some Maltese friends. Here is a link to a new company my Maltese woman's brother has just set up. www.maltasailingexperiences.com/

It is seen as joke in China what we call a democracy, and even more so with the US. China has always had a head guy running it. This is the way they manage themselves, but the tradition is the leaders must be benign? towards those they govern. I'm not sure if that word translates very well, but in all situations of leader an those under his control the leader must act for the good of everyone. This is why their system works. It's not so far removed from the Christian tradition we were brought up on. Above all they are happy with it and I'm glad it is working out for them they have worked much harder than we have and deserve it.

If you honestly think the Chinese Communist Party survives because it's popular, then you're stupid. Are you stupid BvL?

Look the basic problem is not me being stupid but the rest of the freakin' News media being completely wrong about China. Now if you are the sort who goes with majority view then you'll be copying the same errors too.
I know it is hard to believe me given so much proof kicking around that I'm wrong, but I do check my own facts. The thing is though we have it better than they do for some things and vice versa. In my view the best aspect of our lot is we live in real houses with a front and back garden, a garage ans a conservatory. In china you are 50 floors up in a sky scraper. On the plus side their technology and education beats us hands down, they are honest and moral, they have excellent transport infrastructure and loads more, but I'd be reluctant to trade my house for a sky scraper apartment. Also i'm like you and like the peace of the countryside and natural things. Give it time though and we might see China look as rich as what we once were, as we are really living off past wealth as a nation. Oh and the CPC's popularity has crept up. I think the last measure was 89% now it is 91% or there abouts. They are seen as somewhat like heroes of the people.

The vast majority of the 1.4 billion people in China do not live in skyscrapers, but they are all spied on by a social credit system enforced by the CCP to ensure people are kept under control. There are at least two Hong Kong Chinese in this country who the CCP have put a bounty of HK$1millon on their heads for speaking out against China. What sort of a country puts a price on peoples heads, other than Russia and China. And you reckon the CCP is popular! You're away with the fairies. People will say the CCP is popular because they would be bloody fools not to.

The thing is her views about China are the same as what I experience on the internet. The culture over there is radically different so it hard for us to imagine it. Even European countries are somewhat familiar to us as we share a lot of culture and language, but that civilisation took it own path over thousands of years. It's a very friendly and positive-looking society. They are all like that, including the folk on the CPC. The main difference between the government and your average Joe is if you make it into government it means you are highly intelligent. There is not a single slacker running anything. You get to what you work for.

well it's precious because we have massively increased the population through importing migrants and have nowhere new to save the water we have. Yes we do they just haven’t built new reservoirs, only 8% of the UK is urbanised. Have you seen kielder water? built to serve the industry that never came but shrank thanks to Maggie. We have plenty of water just don’t collect enough. I know what you are saying wapentake , but the argument only 8% of the uk is urbanised is a false and misleading argument. Im a member of a weather forum , and i mind reading( will try find the link) that on a global scale , humanity needs a large amount of the earth non urbanised to be able to live , for water food etc.
There was actually a scientific formula to calculate this. So while only 8 % of the uk is urbanised , another few ways of looking at it would be for example England makes up 40 % of the land of these islands , but has nearly 80 % of the popualtion. England could fit inside france 5 times over , but has a popualtion similar.
On top of that , there is more water in loch ness than in the whole of England and wales combined.
The uk hasnt been able to grow enough food to feed itself for hundreds of years.
So its not just a problem of lack of building more reservoirs , and the nimbyism in your back yards , but england does have an overpopualtion problem with no government willing to tackle it. The estimated popualtion what england should have is around 20 million , but instead is around 55 million.
The westmisnter government cant keep growing the uk/english popualtion indefinetly without the resources and infrastructure to manage it. We saw that problem during the new labour and blair years , where new labour were correct that mass migration and the taxes they paid supported labours treasurey , but on the flip side with a lack of major investment in things like reservoirs , school places , roads etc , we all saw the problem the millions of people coming here caused.

Even so Thomas taking England on its own only10.6% is urbanised,we could be near self sufficient in food if they tried and not covering it with solar panels or paid not to use it. To Pacifico I’m not advocating increasing the population but we do have the water resources if we care to utilise it.
