It's a good fucking job Hitler lost. Celebrate the defeat of that Austrian dictator tonight with a nice British pint of beer. Hitler gravely underestimate the resolve and fighting ability of both the US and USSR…..and the British Empire too , I suppose .

Dear Forumers,
You must ask the question of whether the world would ultimately be worse today if Nazi Germany had not been defeated. The world's population would almost certainly be a lot lower, and it is huge overpopulation that is the basis of all difficult issues in the world, and which is heading the world towards inevitable and total disaster. The Middle East and China would probably have been removed out of the equation. And apparently the Nazis wanted to turn Africa into just a massive nature reserve, with only a few human settlements here and there.

I don't claim to be an expert in this particular historical field but I do know where to find them.

I don't claim to be an expert in this particular historical field but I do know where to find them. Good for you but the thread title doesn’t say “ Let’s pretend it’s 1938” . It says “Would UK have been better off staying out of the World Wars?” So there is a lot of room for hindsight . Im not an armchair historian but I do have access to an armchair.

Had the UK become allies to Germany ( or at least left them alone) how would that have affected Japans expansion?

You might be right, but we're talking about decisions that would have needed to be taken in 1914 or 1939. So my earlier point still applies - the men making the decisions could only go by the information they were privy to at that time.
I don't know of any serious historian who would say Britain made the right choice in either case. At least any that didn't have an obvious axe to grind.

But that wasn’t the question . The question was “Would UK HAVE been better off staying out of the World wars”. It had nothing to do with decisions made…so you don’t have a point to stand . Certainly not one that is relevant to the OP. I don’t know a serious historian who didn’t realise that Britain didnt actually make A decision…it made a SERIES of decisions .

I think we have a candidate for Pedant of the Week, a role that has been vacant since Steve left the building.
As a matter of fact, as far as WWII is concerned, a single decision was made on a particular day in May 1940 not to request Benito Mussolini to press the Germans for peace terms.
Read all about in John Lukacs' Five Days in London, May 1940. At least all that has made its way into the public domain (a lot of it hasn't).

I’m sure there was lots of single decisions during WW2 . A series of decisions is a series of single decisions .👍

Well your contribution of historical background and detail to this discussion isn't going to trigger anything or anyone given that it is has been completely non-existent. Even Vinny has made more significant contributions.

Jolly good show. Now do you have anything of actual historical interest to add or are just here for the ten-minute argument?

Jolly good show. Now do you have anything of actual historical interest to add or are just here for the ten-minute argument? I’m here to offer my opinion in Veronica’s thread . You seem to be here to be the resident expert and protecting pedant . I suggest you stop that and follow my example.
