I can't quite fit the title in. It should read
Build your own satellite ground station for more than a tenner and get free calls
It's a follow on from my previous thread on a previous forum on how to build your own mobile phone for less than a tenner and get free calls (e.g. using a wifi hotspot. )
Before you ask, I have not built this one, but I can show you how to thanks to the wonders of Youtube and crazy Americans. You see up in the sky are loads of telecoms satellites which send data back to earth by bouncing it off a satellite. These satellites are really just satellite dishes in the sky connected to computers that you can log on to, so you can like urr borrow someone's satellite to talk to mates in places where there aren't any normal phones or cell towers. Yes I know it is cheeky to do this. Satellite calls are normally crazy money like £5/minute. My father used to call us sometimes on his friend's 's yacht in the middle of the Atlantic. The audio can be quite good, albeit it tends to suffer a delay.

And how does that overcome the time delay (LAG)? Simple because it doesn't...Even a child knows that a dish has to be in the line of sight and lets not even mention interference problems. And cost even on the surplus market it would cost several thousand bucks for al that gear.

It all depends on whose satellite you are piggybacking off.
A real ground station cost a bit more than a tenner, we put two in the back of a truck to ship to australia in 1991 and they cost about £300,000 each then
If the Baron has got some dodgy deal he really ought to watch he isn't being used as a hub to distribute goat and kiddie porn. A chap called Steve Arnold worked at the client in Milton Keynes where I created much of this stuff for Inmarsat, the idiot English MD got rid of the System IT Manager and this allowed this kid to upload christ knows how many megabytes of his particular type of porn into the ingres databases of these systems, and have them shipped out to countries across the equatorial belt encrypted and unseen.
I was working on a submarine system in Newport Pagnell a year or two later when i picked up a copy of the local equivalent of what today you'd call the "Metro" and in the centre pages was the story of the Vice squad raiding the site with the "step away from the terminal, please, sir" line.
I immediately called the two guys i worked with to verify and they verified the story as accurate.
Arnold tried to get off his criminal trial on the grounds the materials, being entirely electronic, were not an obscene publication under the act.
His defence brief was thrown out of the court. Literally.
We never did achieve a 100% confidence level tat we purged his material from the Ingres Database ....

Yes John I seem to remember you stating on the other Forum that you had worked in that field. BVL sure wants to spend a lot of cash to send a garbled call via satellite. It would be far cheaper just to purchase a cotia satellite phone, and not have all that parafanalia to lug around.

So how is all this better than my £10 burner phone from Argos ? Perhaps you didn't know that the Baron made a mobile that he could sell for a tenner. The key selling point was that it didn't work. Perhaps this new idea is to show why all inventions don't work.

It is like he is 9 years and hoping that someone will give him ten bob to go to the Saturday Morning pictures

I know nothing about electronics, but managed to build my (musician) son a pretty good Theremin, during Lockdown, using a schematic scribbled out by a PROPER engineer, and twenty quid's worth of bits from "Potts" the best DIY electronics shop around..

I want a smart phone with one of those video thingys and with the instructions on the lines of attach A to B. If possible, use terminal blocks rather than soldered joints.
Many thanks and crack on

Back in the 70s I lived in a large squat in Hampstead (Oak Tree House) ... occupied by people who had dropped out from sophisticated occupations. A phone was set up that allowed free calls to anywhere in the world. Wanna have an hour long call to relatives in Australia? No problem.

I've no idea how much it cost him. The surplus market has many things people don't understand and are chucking them away. Some guy on youtube was given a full electron microscope for free. Some university department was throwing it out.
