"If an asylum seeker is placed in contingency accommodation such as a hotel, which offers meals, they are eligible for £8.24 per week to cover clothes, non-prescription medication and travel. They are not eligible for mainstream benefits". People may wonder why 'some' asylum seekers turn to crime. To say "Asylum seekers are fuelling crime' is just not true. More sheer bollocks, suggest you look at the track record of the Albanian Crime Gangs that are coming across the Channel every ruddy day, they are running the Cocaine Trade here in the South East, also Cannabis factories around the country, all tooled up and ruthless Albanians crossing the Channel this years outnumbered other nationalities crossing the Channel in rubber boats since the beginning of the year, now it is Indians, neither group are fleeing famine or war Some good News for a change www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/trio-jailed-for-their-part-in... The government is responsible for the state of our asylum system not the asylum seekers.

A lot of people seemingly do not understand that as of the very moment you claim asylum, you cease been an ilegal immigrant, and instead become an Asylum Seeker.

No you become an asylum seeker and an illegal migrant. If you enter a country illegally you are for all time an illegal migrant. If you steal you are always a thief.

Some posters are clearly struggling with the legal term for 'illegal migrants', they are getting them confused with genuine asylum seekers or refugees, there is a clear distinction. Immigrants that have entered the UK via a illegal route are illegal migrants, and paid criminals, namely people trafficker's large sums of money so they can jump the queue in the legal process that the UK has in place for processing genuine migrants for UK visas.
It's not rocket science, and most of us suspect the posters in question know exactly what the term 'illegal migrants' mean, they are just goading and baiting for reactions.

In order to claim asylum, a person must make that claim upon the sovereign territory of the country in which they wish to claim asylum.
If an asylum seeker does not possess a passport, and is unable to apply for a passport in their country of birth, then how does that asylum seeker claim asylum in the UK, if the UK is their chosen country of asylum. ?

If you were correct, then why is it that an asylum seeker who has had their application for asylum accepted to be processed, is not then either arrested or charged with entering the country illegally. ?

They usually are if caught. No they are not, they are put in hotels awaiting a decision on their claim for asylum.
LOL! You think that people don't get arrested for illegal immigration?

Sorry what is this 'chosen country of asylum'. Asylum seeking is not a supermarket shopping trip, it is a deadly serious situation whereby one is in desperate need of a place of safety and one moves heaven and earth to leave the country one is in to any place of safety. Once that place of safety is reached, asylum is claimed and refugee status granted then one can go about 'choosing' and the country of 'choice' can go about accepting or refusing.

They could be, but as per the convention we put the illegal means of entry to one side. If they have been shown to break other laws to get here though their claim can be dismissed out of hand. Asylum seekers have responsibilities as well you know.
