When do you believe this changed? Within the framework set by the government. They cannot control what happens on a global basis and neither can they 'overcome' the stupidity of a lunatic government. |

For nearly two years the general populace were prevented from spending their money as they wished. No holidays. £4000/yr No new car. £1500/yr No meals out. £1200/Yr No traveling to work. £1000/Yr No days out/entertainment. £2000/Yr Etc, etc, etc..... And then, all of a sudden that accumulated cash can be spent freely. Shock, horror, inflation! No shit sherlock. Spending money fuels inflation??? |

I think that Rishi Sunak is primarily to blame for our current inflation because he spent £400 billion on furlough. It's pretty obvious that the BoE printed this money (i.e. QE) - and possibly also the £50 billion Sunak pissed away with "Bounce back" loans. Sunak was, at the time, preparing his "Ready for Rishi" campaign to be PM by stabbing Boris in the back. He needed to get the public on his side. It was obviously a stupid policy and the BoE should have - at the very least - reined Sunak in. But they just kowtowed to the little ****. That's how the BoE loses control of inflation. The BoE are meant to be in control of the money supply. Mervyn King would never have done this. So the bank of England should have said, no. Who is running this country the BoE or the government? Yes. One of the BoE's jobs is to control inflation. This bout of QE was almost certain to exacerbate inflation so it shouldn't have done it. Quite a lot of the money was wasted in any case - the amount of fraud was very high. Plainly a lot of inflation was unavoidable because world energy prices, but the BoE made it much worse. |

They are free to operate within certain parameters and decisions are not made by politicians. Just like I am free to operate within certain parameters and the decisions I make are based on those limits. |

The USA subsidises fuel, resulting in low fuel prices. Is it time our government did something similar as a short term measure in response to the war? A result of that would be more money in the public's pockets. And more disposable money that would be taxed. This is not strictly correct. The Federal government does not subsidise fuel but rather does not tax it to anywhere near the same extent as other western governments do (especially the UK)
This link gives comparative figures in $ per US gallon as of 2018; it won't be very different now.
