This Sunday at 3pm the government are going to test an emergency alarm that will go off on every mobile phone in the country. Why does that need doing now?
In this world of 24 hour news is there more to this than a sudden need to warn us of a flood or forest fire.

Yes. The idea that the people in the uk really need a system to alert them to emergencies like tornados, forest fires and floods, is quite ludicrous. Additionally, the alert itself comes through a mobile phone.

We are close with an unstable Putin plus the standoff over Taiwan, however an alert if it kicks off is a waste of time.

Governments never fail to capitalise on fear do they? How on Earth would an alarm on your phone help protect you from the effects of a nuclear war? Imo this is just another way to keep the public scared.

Perhaps the Government could send out a leaflet about it? - after all people were complaining that we were not ready for the Pandemic so better get started now on your preparations.

That wouldn't be much use. Russian television recently showed how it would play out. The Russians would explode several nuclear bombs off the west coast of Ireland, creating a massive tsunami that would drown everyone in the UK and Ireland.

Si vis pacem para bellum.
If you want peace, prepare for war.
That way, the enemy knows you're not fucking about and won't try it on.

Sure, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the Kremlin might not share its plan of attack with the media. On the other hand, that particular method of attack is not entirely implausible.

It would be useless in a nuclear attack, but it could be used for regional alerts for high winds, floods, high temperatures, major motorway incidents, terrorist attacks, virus outbreaks etc.

And if we don't here it directly we get it from friends and family. But. If a flood happened in the middle of the night, then the alarm system could be vital.

I tried to run it after the world rattled a bit a few miles from here.
