Love or Hate is the wrong question: Thatcher was an absolute requirement at the time. yeah...the lass brought the UK kicking and screaming into the 20th century....glad that the likes of Red Robbo and Brenda Dean and Arthur Scargil and Gavin Laird et al and the "closed shop" and "differentials" and "collective bargaining" died the death they deserved |

I guess the idea of a "quasi-free market" approach scared many as the opposite was so ingrained in people lives but which was ultimately untenable (again much like today). I mean, I suppose like Thatcher I think there is only so much that Government should be responsible for against that which the individual should take responsibility for. Anyway...I think the key moment for Thatcher was when the BL workers voted overwhelmingly against the reinstatement Red Robb after he was fired by Edwards - I think that was moment when she though the fight was worth fighting...who knows.... |
