www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65167914His disastrous choice to equalise the tax benefit enjoyed by those living in sin but denied to the married couple of multiple MIRAS relief by not giving it to everyone individually but terminating multiple claims, AND doing that not immediately but giving six months notice CAUSED a housing boom and subsequent crash accompanied by negative equity that would take DECADES to right itself. But somehow the BBC chooses to ignore that.

Negative equity was more of a problem after John Major replaced him, took us into the ERM and crashed the economy, something Nigel Lawson had warned against.

Oh dear JoG, consider yourself told off by a sanctimonious person who does not approve of your language. Sanctimonious poster at his most pathetic. I've already posted on the other thread about Nigel Lawson, I hadn't realised his career coincided with a housing crash.

To jack prices up by 110% and then tank them by 30% leaving christ knows how many thousands in negative equity, trapped in unsellable homes took quite some brilliance

Negative equity was more of a problem after John Major replaced him, took us into the ERM and crashed the economy, something Nigel Lawson had warned against. True, but then John is unduly sensitive to even the most minor blows to his wallet.
Lawson cut income tax, opposed the EU, ERM and the climate change industry and had accordingly, all the virtues. As for negative equity, that is bollocks. The housing market has always lurched from boom to bust. If you have any sense buy a house in an area and among people that you like. If you are having a bit of a flutter then good for you, but remember that shit happens.

Biggest housing boom and bust in recent history occurred between 1997 & 2008. It eclipsed the housing bust of the 80's by a long way.

Possibly, but it does not alter the fact that there is not much that can be done about it. If governments could control the housing market they would because it is such a fantastic vote winner. But they can't and just end up being the prey of the dimwittery of the conspiracy industry.

Not quite on topic, but I never understood why it was ever OK for anyone renting money to buy a house to live in got tax relief, while anyone borrowing money to pay their rent didn’t…
