He was one of the finest Chancellors of the Exchequer in modern times.
Very sad news.

R.I.P. Nigel. He was one of the statesmen. Not many of those left now.

Sad news, he was a proper Conservative chancellor. To be honest, I didn't know he was still alive, 'was' being the operative word. RIP Nigel Lawson.

Wasn't he one of those Brexiteers who moved to France?

Veteran climate change opponent, Brexit supporter and economic boom/buster but for all that I disagreed with him on such, IMHO he was always worth listening to.
RIP

Another good Chancellor of the Exchequer (much as I dislike much of what he stands for), was Kenneth Clarke, the man who sorted out the post ERM recession economy and caused a long period of stability with policies initially copied by Labour.
When it's Ken's turn to pop his clogs I'll put aside my differences and find something decent to say about him as well.
But anyway, Nigel Lawson. From what I saw he was a good Chancellor and a gent.

Even Lawson admitted he got it wrong with that boom to bust folly. Clarke did a very good job of getting the economy back in order and growing, when back as a minister in 2010 he nigh on destroyed our justice system and that will damn him forever

Another good Chancellor of the Exchequer (much as I dislike much of what he stands for), was Kenneth Clarke, the man who sorted out the post ERM recession economy and caused a long period of stability with policies initially copied by Labour. Which was created by Lawson when he going through his EU-enthusiast stage and decided to start shadowing the D-mark which eventually morphed into the disaster that was ERM. I believe it was the collapse of that policy that changed Lawson from being an EU enthusiast to being skeptical about the whole European dream..

You're right, I didn't realise that Lawson was pro ERM.
That's a shame. It is a policy that could only work properly with full fiscal union. A shared tax system, common wages, even a common benefits system.
Hindsight taught Lawson a lot.

from the 'popped his clogs' thread: Oh dear JoG, consider yourself told off by a sanctimonious person who does not approve of your language. Sanctimonious poster at his most pathetic. I've already posted on the other thread about Nigel Lawson, I hadn't realised his career coincided with a housing crash. Yes, its funny how some people forget just how ‘brilliant’ he was. To jack prices up by 110% and then tank them by 30% leaving christ knows how many thousands in negative equity, trapped in unsellable homes took quite some brilliance Well maybe if you'd read this original thread instead of starting that sick titled duplicate thread you'd have seen I did know about his idiot boom and bust Had you actually read about Lawson instead of keeping your enduring visceral hate you'd have known he admitted and apologised for his part in those house price swings. For most people John the passing of over 30 years is well long enough not to speak so sickly of the repentant dead. Not for you obviously.
