Prisoners serving whole life sentences would be prevented from marrying under new Government plans. It comes amid anger over a bid by Milly Dowler's killer Levi Bellfield to challenge a decision blocking the serial killer from marrying in prison. Bellfield, 54, is currently serving two whole life sentences for the murder of the 13 year-old and two other women. Milly Dowler was snatched from the street walking from school to her home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March 2002. Justice Secretary Dominic Raab has pledged to “change the law” to prevent those serving whole life sentences from getting married, but the move could create fresh legal challenges for the Government. Downing Street on Friday confirmed that details of the planned legislation would be announced in “due course”, calling it “deeply inappropriate” that such criminals can marry while incarcerated. www.itv.com/news/meridian/2023-03-17/serial-killer-levi-bellfields-request-to-marry-prompts-plans-to-change-lawPersonally I think this is embarrassing for the government the courts and our entire judicial system. The fact that a convicted serial killer can use legal aid to launch a judicial review if the government stop him marrying? This is just mad, no one serving a prison sentence should be allowed to marry.

What difference does it make if he is allowed to marry? He's not going on a honeymoon in the Caribbean, is he? He won't get conjugal rights. I'd more want to examine the head of the person* wanting to marry him.
* Was going to say woman, but you know how it is.

And the fact that you don't see why a serial killer who is serving two whole life sentences should not be allowed to marry, suggests you're a bit a lefty.

The only reason he's doing this is because some lefty lawyer says he can, at public expense.

My immediate thought was "murderers should not have rights", then I thought - just let him get married, it's cheaper all round and the faux outrage will disappear in a week.

I do not understand your rationale. Your immediate thought was "murderers should not have rights". Excellent I thought, we're on the same page. Then you had to spoil it by going all limp wristed and left wing.

Do you understand the concept of prison? The denial of liberty as a punishment because an individual cant live by rules set down by civilised society. Assuming you accept that concept, then why should an individual who is in prison because he cant live by those rules, be granted the privileges of a free man?

Do you understand the concept of prison? I should do! The denial of liberty as a punishment because an individual cant live by rules set down by civilised society. Yes, and also to keep them away from the public. Assuming you accept that concept, then why should an individual who is in prison because he cant live by those rules, be granted the privileges of a free man? It's just a short ceremony inside a jail which ends up with a marriage certificate. Is it that much of a privilege? I wouldn't allow any consummation rights, mind you!

Norway allows conjugal visits and has the lowest recidivism rate at 20% compared to 60% of British prisoners who reoffend within a year. Prisoners who get conjugal visits tend to behave better so they won't lose them, and that translates to lower costs for the prison system in the long run.

Whoa there, looking at Norway is not in any sense, looking at the big picture. Remember mass murderer Anders Breivik? He made Norwegian law look bloody stupid. So much so the Norwegian government had to change the law or face global ridicule. You see in Norway the maximum sentence for any crime is 20 years, in a very comfortable prison. The Norwegian government quickly realised that even in socialist Norway, Breivik who murdered 77 people could not be released after 20 years. The left wing Norwegian unicorns crashed and burned.
