Over the last 30 years, there have been numerous Opinion Polls conducted in Taiwan on "Identity" and who the people there feel they are, and want to be.
Since 1992 the HIGHEST polling figure for those who identify with the Peoples Republic, was 25%
Throughout modern history, the issue that the Allies / Western Europe / NATO and the democratic world have had a huge problem with, has been Democracy.
Whether it be The Red Army and the Soviet Union taking over other peoples countries and installing Communist puppets, or whether it be the imposition of rule over people who dont want to be ruled over, it is this basic fundamental right which we in the democratic world insist upon.

So sword, have I got this right You believe that Kosovo which has Serbian population of 7% and a Kosovan population of 88% belongs to Serbia Do you not feel that it should be up to the people who actually live there who should decide who they are, and where they belong. Kosovo is a Serbian province and recognised as such by the UN and other international bodies, thats just a fact, its not recognised as a seperate Country by the majority in the World,What if the Welsh used violence and terrorism to beak away from the UK or even Cornwall? would you be ok with that?i know your double standards extend to the Donbass/Ukraine,difference is the people in Donbass were attacked by the Ukrainian State,in Kosovo the Albanian terrorists the KLA were attacking the Serb population and the security forces, they also attacked many Albanians who didn't go along with the terror.

Northern Ireland is unquestionably part of Ireland, but since Irish independence the people who actually live there, in Ulster, do not want to be "Irish".
The Falkand Islands are 300 miles from Argentina, and 4000 miles from the UK, but no one who lives on the islands wants to be Argentinian.
Some people in Scotland wish Scotland to be independent, currently around 55% do not - when the referendum took place, a narrow majority favoured remaining within the United Kingdom.
What happened in The Donbas was that there was no separatist movement, there was no political party similar to the SNP, there was no independence campaign.
The biggest party elected by the people of The Donbas favoured Ukrainian unity, but with more autonamy to be handed to the regions.
[This is important] >> I would back any armed separatist movement if such a movement had the backing, and the democratic will of the people with them, and behind them.
In the Donbas, the separatists had no mandate from the people, and we therfore go back to the basic principle of YOU CANNOT IMPOSE RULE BY FORCE.

Actually if you look at the country with the highest prison population per capita it is the Land of the Free. Who would have thought that!

There are Islamic suicide bombers and "honor killings"(sic) which I don't like. As for the Chinese, the one thing you get to notice is they are very polite and civilised. I like civilised people and so I personally get on well with them. They are also very optimistic and I like that. There is a saying in china which translates to "we will find a way". It sums them up. They have no time for you. You are a gweilo but keep up the sycophancy. Gweilo means white devil. Surely this would be reserved for those Daily Mail readers who hate China and want to attack it. I on the other hand often help them with technical things and I get a lot of appreciation. The one thing they love is knowledge and understanding. In particular i have been taking an interest in their semiconductor problem. The US is cutting them off so they have to make their own chips, and making chips is a matter of physics. It's something I know about and can teach. I'm trying to build a little bridge between UK tech and China tech. One day we could work together to build the next generation of computers. Some work is being done on this in Oxford. If only the UK could get its mind straightened out we could be onto a very good thing here. They would very much like to work with us and the question is are we sensible enough to work with them. Oxford University is one place this happens. It could make us rich if the US did not steal the technology as it always does when we work with them, so how about working on Chinese British partnerships. We are already favoured over the US as we are far less hawkish and its more a case of the US forcing our hand on the issue. So we have to be crafty and build this relationship despite US pressure. We will have to stand up to the US. China is building a kind of chip hub over in the East, but say the UK was like the European member, that would be very interesting. We could get into a major industry without Uncle Sam. Chip imports from the US to China were $400bn/year before the bans. Latest figures put it as $100bn less as Chinese chip manufacturers replace the business. The new chip technology is far more advanced and Oxford is a world leader. We can not develop it on our own. We need Chinese industrial support.

They remember the embarrassment of falling to the British empire and the Japanese invasion. They won’t let that go. The sleeping giant is awake now . I remember having an online conversation with a yank about 20 years ago . He said that the Chinese will become Westernised when they become wealthy . He couldn’t understand that they have a culture of collectivism and not individualism like the west . I was amazed at the way Hong Kong is a melting pot of many cultures , how hard they worked and how Hong kong actually works ..but they don’t like the mainland Chinese . The mainland Chinese don’t think like them . I suspect the same goes for Taiwan.

The mainland Chinese don’t think like them . I suspect the same goes for Taiwan. I also remember 20 years ago. One of our leading audio firms which probably makes some of the best audio equipment this country produces and won a queens export award for it started getting their stuff made in China. I asked why? People at that time thought Chinese industry was cheap and nasty, but here we have some of the top experts in the country gamble their reputation on these goods. They clearly knew something I did not, and if I were to accept their professional judgment then I would have to accept even 20 years ago their industry was better than what we could produce. At about this time i noticed other impressive technical specs of products coming from China. At that time I'd say Hong Kong was serving the niche for the high end manufacturing.
The thing is if you just took this single fact as true the implications were they could kind of take over. You see at that time the argument was don't buy Chinese if you want quality, and that we could always produce better than they could because we can do it better. So you could see the map out in front. if they could win at manufacturing then they would become rich and when rich why the hell would they want to follow the failure that came before? They would be boss. It turned out that way, but it sure did take a lot of heckling of people saying the reverse. They never argue this point now though.
By the way, from what I can make out the people in Hong Kong and Taiwan are perfectly OK with their Chinese cousins. The chap who runs Asianometry lives over in Taiwan and he talks about the Chinese a lot and what I get is they are straightforward with them. The Chinese don't hate so many people like we British do. They might think the Indians are backwards and poke fun at them, but not nastily, and even with the Japs, they say it is sad they are still controlled by the US and don't have minds of their own. Still there is no hate, but say if the Japs started being more into working with China then they would welcome them strongly. That reminds me, a Chinaman said to me the other day regarding their chip problem, they have a Jap expert helping them who got done over by his own side, like blackballed. This is how they work. Half the stuff going on goes on in the shadows, away from US intelligence.

People from Hong Kong don’t like the mainland Chinese government . A few told me that and a bloke who lived there for ten years said it. Chinese are racist too. Yiu should find out how black people are treated in mainland China . They don’t like you either . You are a gweilo.

Well having had a think about it, I think we may be both right, but talking about different things. In China there is a class system and just as we have in the UK there are the lower class morons who one sees having fights down pubs and all of that. Those of a low class in China may well have negative attitudes about a lot of things. The Chinese I chat to are a mix of technicians, scientists, administrator types and all of that, and in that class of people it is very civilised and polite. They are keen to get on with everyone and don't hate anyone. Well the only people they really have it in for are the US deep state, as in they see them as a bunch of evil criminals, so even the American citizens they will be quite happy to take at face value.
Mind you it has been said that culturally people of white skin are seen in a much better light than those with dark skin. If you want to know the origin of that, it's not what you think! It comes from the association of farm labourers who worked all day long in the fields and got a sun tan. In the US they call them Red-necks. If I tell the Chinese I'm from the UK it is perfectly OK. We have a good reputation over there (not the government but those citizens of Britain they meet). In fact their state TV will often like to get a Brit on to stick up for China. They really like us. I mean it is kind of weird, but people say if you go around in China looking British people will want to come up and talk to you. This is why now we have left that EU we could sneak in and reposition ourselves as an industrial partner with China and do very well out of it.
The fusion of the two cultures could create some great products. The best thing is, if you want to talk to the Chinese as the British nation, your best bet is constructive positive ideas. Bury all the negative shit, cos they are really sick of listening to it. I think we aught to be careful which MPs we send over there. Some are really rude and terrible for our reputation as our representative.

There is a video series on YouTube by a South African who lived in China and married first a Chinese girl from Hong Kong and then a mainland Chinese woman ( a doctor no less ). They left China a couple of years ago and he posts a lot of video’s criticising China . However for the first couple of years the videos were light hearted . What he did claim is that Chinese women tend think Western men are generally more attractive than Chinese men. I found that quite amusing .

What he did claim is that Chinese women tend think Western men are generally more attractive than Chinese men. I found that quite amusing . In China what is attractive is what many of us see as old school, as per moderate, manners, sophistication, intelligence. The more like that you are, and especially in the knowledge department the cooler you are going to look to the more educated Chinese, e.g. those who live in the tier one cities. They are a bit like London. Property is some 30x the cost per square foot as it is in a tier 5, so these places are where all the important jobs are, like Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
One thing to note about the middle class over there is there is this trendy movement to think of oneself as one of the Han Chinese. This was the dynasty which was before the Qing dynasty, which they consider as interlopers. There's a whole fashion thing going on to dress in the traditional clothes and often this relates to whiter skin colour. You see white skin symbolises purity, which relates to moral purity, so the ladies like the idea of marrying up the social order. It's all very compliocated the way their society works on a social level.
Yes it can be very strange, but fortunately the Brits are liked. This means we could do good business with them because at the moment they are decoupling from America due to these sanctions. They see us as more reliable and we should not blow an impression which is favourable. I think it is because the Brits who visit China are far more open minded and intelligent enough not to be put off by all the propaganda. So just so long as no brutish thug politicians from here start arguing we should be OK. They have already banned Duncan-Smith. However what is current government policy is indeed to develop trade relations, so they are kind of coming around to what I've been saying for a long time. It's an opportunity not to be missed. Labour are also backing the idea of good trade relations, but all the while the US will do its utmost to fuck it up for Britain. It hates competition, but it is time we learnt how to be competitive again. We are too timid sometimes - too scared to do anything that might upset the US.

What is attractive is that we are considered better looking and generally have bigger knobs. Bet your Chinese friends didn’t tell you that .😉
