Magrathea ... "The purpose of the refugee system is to allow people to flee from danger, not to get them into the UK."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Any asylum seeker may choose which country of sanctury they wish to apply in, and the United Kingdom is not the choice of most, neither do we attract more than anyone else.
Reasons for choosing the UK are many, it could be the ability to speak English, it could be that an Afgan worked with British forces, it could be that they know someone here.
Some countries DO have a very large number of refugees, but the UK is not one of them, Turkey for example on the border with Syria is struggling to cope.
It is a fact of life that SOME refugees will hope to eventually go home, but others will decide to try for a new start in a new country ( mostly asylum seekers ).
If the UN worked properly, and if countries agreed to co-operate, there would be a quota system for every nation, but you cannot expect people to live for years in tents, in refugee camps, living on handouts, in limbo.

Taking in those fleeing war is not to be mesured by "success" and its not a game where you have targetsSo in Sids ideal world the UK would open its doors to all 100 million displaced people in the world? So every person in the world displaced by war or persecution should have the right to apply for asylum in the UK? So it is a numbers game - in that case what sort of number do you have in mind? - 1 million? - 2 million? I'm not convinced that dumping all the UK's asylum seekers in Scotland would go down too well.

Pacifico ... Your above post is silly
No, of course we should not, and cannot take in Millions of refugees and asylum seekers
If every country implemented the same, or similar new rules that our government is proposing, then no one from any war zone would ever be allowed to flee and ask for sanctuary in any country unless they had a passport and were given a visa, and then went on a scheduled flight
and that is not acceptable because its absurd and ridiculous

“MOST refugees will return home” any evidence for that? I can guarantee none whatsoever, unless Sid is buying them dinghies for the return journey or hiring lorries for them to jump in the back of.

Or is it the case (as I am starting to suspect) that any number by the Tories would not be good enough, yet an identical number by Labour would be an example of how generous and welcoming they are.

The same conflation again. That they are not constrained on who they ask doesn't mean they have a right to enter or do anything else.

Pacifico ... "OK Sid - lets lay it on the line. You have been banging on about this all day so lets put some meat on the bones. Since the start of 2021 the UK has given refuge to 437,000 people - more refugees have come to the UK since Brexit than at any time since the Second World War. So how many more are you suggesting we should take? - would you have taken a million? - 2 million perhaps? - how many?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A large percentage of those people are Ukrainian refugees, and many, most, will want to go back, indeed some have already gone back home. More people have come to the UK seeking refuge because of the war in Ukraine - and it is the right thing for this country to do. We need a sensible and compassionate asylum / refugee policy based upon genuine need, not on economic migrants and people from Albania. The present government have failed in every aspect of asylum and migration Would have been a good idea for us not to have started the war in Ukraine in 2014.

Albania was a strange country. They broke up with the Soviets thinking the Soviets weren't communists enough and started to be friends with China but even the Chinese weren't communist enough so Albania went its own way in its communist utopia.
Now 40 years later there are hundreds of thousands of Albanians all over Western Europe and Albania is a member of NATO.
Just imagine the pace of change.
