A knife-wielding man has been shot by armed officers in a police station car park in Derby and has died from his wounds. The man, who has not yet been identified, was seen with a knife in the secure car park of Ascot Drive Police Station, off Ascot Drive, in Derby. First reported at 9.55am, armed officers were sent to the scene and, at 10.03am a police firearm was discharged. The man sustained a gunshot injury and first aid was administered before he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/derby-news/knifeman-shot-dead-derby-police-7677880OK it's sad that someone has been killed, but I have to say; well done the police. If the police shot a few more knife wielding idiots perhaps low IQ chavs would be less inclined to carry knives.

I'm not sure what the police rules of engagement are but, I would argue that if the officer or any member of the public is being threatened with a knife weilding thug, then urgent drastic action is necessary.

Sounds like it was necessary to drop him.

It is not necessary to shoot a disturbed knife wielder. Let's not turn into the US.

In my opinion Monte, the guy with the machete should have been shot. It's ridiculous that unarmed [with firearms] police risk there lives attempting to arrest a lunatic with a long bladed weapon. I doubt anyone would have criticised the police for shooting him.

What happened to their tasers? No, I don't think it was necessary to shoot someone 3 times for waving a knife around. It's not the sort of policing I want.

Would you rather one of the police or a passing member of the public were stabbed ? Monte, today in this richly diverse multicultural country stabbings are so routine it's almost unnewsworthy. Knife crime is out of control, low IQ chavs who regard a knife as a fashion accessory should be under absolutely no illusion that if they carry a knife there is a very real possibility they will be shot.

Of course not but I don't want shooting to be the first option. The video shows it is possible to contain and arrest someone without having to shoot them. Why was he not tased?

Monte, why should a copper risk being stabbed and possibly killed by some low life knife wielding chav? In that situation as far as I'm concerned if the police have issued a warning and the knife carrier refuses to cooperate, he gets shot.

Agree, he could and should have been tasered. To have killed him is something of a tragedy, especially if he was high or mentally disturbed. Feel sorry for the unarmed police. He could have killed any one of them. They should have had tasers.

It all depends on the threat level, taser if its not a deadly attack but if a officer is actually attacked its justified,it can be a tough call, remember when that British soldier was killed by those Islamist terrorists in London i think one was shot.

Agreed, we need more information than Red's link gives but going on the 8 mins between the incident being reported and a firearm being discharged it seems that the armed response team went straight to the use of deadly force without trying a non-lethal method such as a taser. Lee Rigby was not armed when he was butchered by two Islamists and was on his own. Both attackers were then shot when the armed response team arrived and they were charged by the terrorists in a suicide by cop attack. Not the same situation as a lone knifeman in a police car park.

Tasers have no effect on some people, their effectiveness is at best limited. You have to be very close to the target and you have just one shot, if you miss you're stuffed. No, I'm afraid if someone is intent on attacking a police officer with a bladed weapon he should be shot.
