Interesting point made in todays Guardian - Brexit is no longer an issue that is of interest to the British people, in fact it seems that the only people still banging on about it are those that are still upset we have left - everyone else has moved on to other, more important issues..
"And finally, of course, the British people don’t really care about the protocol. They no longer even care that much about Brexit – which has fallen out of the top 10 issues of concerns to the public. Sunak will probably benefit from being seen to focus on the issues that do matter to them, rather than waging a war with Brussels over an issue few outside Northern Ireland care about."

I am not surprised the ones who care are those who objected to leaving. It is their businesses and lives which have been adversely affected.

Thing is if the Tories hadn't fucked up so badly with Covid, they'd still be miles ahead of Labour, precisely because they honoured the vote.

The UK economy is estimated to be 5.5 per cent poorer now than it would have been had it stayed in the EU, according to a study by the Centre for European Reform that compares the UK's current performance with a counterfactual UK that did not leave the EU.
Rubbish the economy has been badly hit since Britain left the EU.

To the Left, do you want public services to be a market for capitalism or a service for taxpayers?
Do you want state ownership of the railways? Do you want state ownership of the Royal Mail?
EU policy drove those privatisations because monopolies are illegal and free market competition is mandatory in the Single Market.
Look at this situation as being your opportunity.
Our trade with the EU had been in decline long before our vote to leave.
You're a leftie, lefties believe in nationalisation.
You cannot have the nationalised economy that lefties dream of, in an environment of economic Darwinism.
Don't look back in anger, make your case for left wing economics.
It'll be interesting to debate that with you.

Monopolies are illegal all over the western world. And private companies can easily become monopolies if unchecked by the state. Free market competition is not contrary to modern left wing economics unless you live in North Korea. Competition is allowed and encouraged in China, Russia and almost every other member nation of the WTO.some more or less controlled by the state. In the west there are state boards which decide whether a merger and aquisition is a monopoly.
I am not sure about the nations of Africa. I suspect there are blatant state monopolies there.
In fact it is extremely difficult to have a monopoly now. Companies merely start a new cell to their beehive of holdings and create new companies dedicated to particular activities. Far better for tax purposes too. Let a few go broke and you write the losses off against company profits. Trump added a few chapters to that particular wheeze.
The question "what is a company" is answered by their articles of association and memorandum of association which defines the limits of its activities in law. And in tax.

Sorry but why would someone who did well out of Brexit, say the ones who kept their tax havens open when the EU was going to close them, complain when the person who shut their business because he can't afford customs duties in sales, not complain? You aren't really going to tell me everyone got a big Brexit Bonus in the post, are you?

The economy was fucked anyway TTL. Decades of EU membership had destroyed much of our manufacturing. There was extensive poverty and heavy dependency on food banks. And EU rules including free movement of people compounded the mess rather than helping things.

Rubbish the economy has been badly hit since Britain left the EU. Yes but the truth is the economy and linkage to trade deals just isn't as tangible to voters as seeing jobs undermined by a massive influx of able Eastern Europeans. The membership or not of the EU has never really been a top 10 issue for those who though it overall a good position but it was a #1 issue for that niche obsessed with imaginary sovereignty over economy of the country. The trick they pulled was to convince millions and millions that the economy would be better out of the EU (and other lies) No one should bet anything precious that a further referendum would give a different result. Or as the famous phrase goes: 'no one ever got poor underestimating the voting public'.
