Arranged marriages banned, marriages and civil partnerships moved to 18, what do you think? I think it should be UK wide law, but it's a good start in England and Wales.

However, the age of sexual consent remains at 16, so it means those people having sex at that age cannot be married. That's an unnecessary disparity. Arranged marriages have been very successful amongst some foreign communities, but the concept is not really British, is it? I married my wife when she was 16 years old. She is currently sat next to me almost 50 years later. Her father signed a consent form, so he obviously though I was an OK chap.

Not that I imagine many will be affected, but it does seem a little odd to increase the age of legal marriage to apparently prevent arranged (not forced) marriages for those under 18 when only a small proportion of the population arranges marriages.
Forcing someone to marry has been an offence for some time.

I do not think it is a good idea to allow fucking at 16 yet ban the millennia old traditional way of dealing with the consequence if that within the nine month window. But then the tossers have for years banned 16 year olds from buying the knife to cut the wedding cake.

You wrote: I like the Tory marriage law better. i didnt write anything. Did you see the big quotation bubble in my post , which was to emphasise the quoted part came from an article on the history of marriage in scotland and how it differs from england?
Did you think scots had english law , and english marriage customs that were only diverged when the nasty devolution came along in 1999 ?
I think you need to pick up a history book vinny about your own "country" and how it works. I think handyman above expanded on the point its up to scots to decide our own laws in retort to your uk wide imposition of marriage laws , something that hasnt happened in the three centuries of this onion.
Which is because under the treaty of union , scots law remained seperate and the church who conducted marriages remained seperate .

I like the Tory marriage law better. When the tories win an election in scotland , they can bring in tory laws. Somehow i would bet if the impossible happened ,( bearing in mind they havent won in scotland for nigh on three quarters of a century) they still wouldnt tamper with the acts of union.....

When kids decide that they are ready, they ain't bothered by any laws about the age of consent.
And if they are, they ain't ready.
