He's right, only smart phones will get these messages as while it may be in text, it isn't an SMS text message. Confusing eh? www.gov.uk/alerts and www.gov.uk/alerts/how-alerts-work#compatible-devices

It has nothing to do with being a dinosaur, but it has got everything to do with choice. The ability, or not, to send and receive text messages has never been a burden. In fact, it is in my opinion, a blessing.

I can't open sheepy's link, but I would have thought location data would have to be enabled, too. Sheepy's link starts: A "national warning message" will be sent directly to every mobile phone across Britain later this month or in early March.
Before the alert is sent a publicity campaign will warn people to expect it and not to panic when they get it.
Officials say the test may be the only time a nationwide message is sent but it will demonstrate that the new system is capable of reaching every part of the country...
You get the drift. And yes, location data will be enabled which is why I refer to mobile phones as hand held trackers.

You can disable location data, but there's so many apps that insist on it being enabled for their app that having it disabled limits the phone. There are a number of warning messages that can be sent on mobile, like weather warnings, earthquakes, and even those evil lockdown notifications. TBH, you're better off without one if you only want to make/recieve calls and text messages.

I agree, I'm better off without one, the thought of carrying a hand held tracker and my movements being monitored and recorded horrifies me. Although tbf, I do have a mobile phone. It's not a smart phone, it's quite simple. I never carry it and off hand I'm not sure where it is, probably in a desk drawer and it will definately have a flat battery and I have no idea where the charger is so it's likely to stay flat, wherever it is.

Hahaha, like you i often go out without my mobile, which, incidentally, is never turned on unless I'm making a call or awaiting a call from MRs. T. It must drive the trackers mad that I seem hardly ever to go out. Somone recently asked me why I treat a mobile as a pain; I told them how long I lived without one.

That link is technically correct, the message will be sent to every mobile phone but not every mobile phone is capable of processing it so won't display it See the gov links posted above for detail on which phone types can (has to be not to ancient Android or iPhones)

It don't change the fact, they are batshit crazy, a test run in case they manage the real thing, which take it from me, they will be texting the rest of us from somewhere they feel is cosy and safe.
