I don't think there's any need to ration them, people are being priced out of them, or is that the plan? Apologies for stealing jonksy's info source, but:
Supermarkets ration fruit and veg as shelves empty in supply shortage: Asda restricts sales of some items to three per customer as UK farmers switch off greenhouses amid soaring energy costs and Europe is hit by 'perfect storm' of growing issues
One shopper, Hilary Paterson-Jones, said she had to visit four supermarkets in her home town of Holyhead, Anglesey, to complete her weekly shop.
She said: 'There was hardly any fresh produce in Tesco. In Morrisons I asked a young staff member what was going on and he said there was nothing in the back stores.
'It was the same in Aldi and Lidl, it seemed to be affecting all the supermarkets.
'Shortages have been getting worse in recent months but I was shocked to see so many empty shelves at 10am on a Saturday morning.
'Things can get bad during the summer when the tourists arrive, but nothing like this. Prices are going through the roof but a lack of basic foodstuffs is unacceptable.'
But there's also similar reports in:
My new hobby is collecting excuses/reasons...

If I was a sceptical person, I would think that the farmers have found a way to hike the price of fruit/veg, and my guess will be when all the fruit and veg return to normal, they'll be twice the price, the good old cost of living crisis excuse strikes again.

Idiot sees clickbait headline screaming that there's a tomato shortage.
Idiot buys extra tomatoes.
< Lap dissolve one week later >
Idiot bins uneaten tomatoes.
Same story every time..

It looks like now the supermarkets have found yet another a stick to beat up Joe public once again....Many of them now are rationing fruit and veg because supposedly the warm weather has hindered crop picking......FFS its either too wet too dry too cold or too dusty for the karens to gather in the crops......I suppose they had to find another excuse as Brexit and covid is done and dusted.
Empty aisles at a Tesco store in Liverpool as a shortage of products continues to hit supermarkets
Vegetable rationing could last 'weeks' as Morrisons becomes second major supermarket to limit sales: NFU president warns shoppers face further restrictions on tomatoes, potatoes, cucumber and broccoli as UK farmers are forced to switch off greenhouses

Idiot sees clickbait headline screaming that there's a tomato shortage. Idiot buys extra tomatoes. < Lap dissolve one week later > Idiot bins uneaten tomatoes. Same story every time.. That almost-annual occurrence is a familiar pain, but empty UK supermarket shelves have been noted more frequently since before Christmas.
We spent some time over the Christmas break in Paris and Burgundy, where it was noticeable how full supermarket shelves were.
But things are getting better — asparagus is getting to the shops some eight weeks early, according to Waitrose...

Exactly, they've always got a hard luck story to push up prices, Brexit, Covid, Ukraine war, now energy/cost of living crisis, and they wont come down again, even when things improve.
Our Sky bill is going up by £10 a month from April for example, ok I know it's not a essential, but nevertheless why would the cost of living crisis have to do with Sky putting up a bill by £10 a month, they are all jumping on the good old cost of living crisis bandwagon, what it boils down to is fuckin greed and screwing people over.

When was Brexit done and dusted with the promised cheaper food and control of our borders?
The Sun had:
SHOP SHORTAGES Full list of supermarket rationing rules as shoppers are warned about shortages way back in December 2022
LBC is saying: Supermarkets across Britain have been hit with a shortage of tomatoes after a wave of bad weather across Europe and Africa disrupted supply chains.
Spain remains a primary source of tomatoes for the UK, which has also been affected by colder weather in recent weeks.
UK importers have become increasingly reliant on Morocco due to Brexit, which has affected with other tomato-producing European nations.
So while there's plenty of excuses being peddled as to why there are these shortages, Brexit is still among them...

We all know they are still playing politics over Brexit, we have the remoaners who would rather see this country sink than accept Brexit, then we have the EU who want to punish us for leaving them. Brexit would be working fine only for the sabotagers, only idiots would think otherwise.

Apparently Asda is temporarily limiting the purchase of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, salad bags, broccoli, cauliflower and raspberries to three of each item per customer.
So the question is, who eats 3 lettuce at a sitting?
When I was at school we would eat a lettuce each before double French and spend the afternoon farting happily while Rosenthal rang around screaming in foreign. It was generally agreed that the Germans committed two terrible war crimes. The first was putting him in a concentration camp camp and the second was letting him out.
I studied French for five years and at the end still could not order a cup of coffee in Boulogne.
But I quite enjoyed the French lessons

I still have my Ration Card issued to me in the 40's somewhere in the house probably in the loft in a box with some of my favourite books, had a spoonful of Cod Liver Oil everyday and Malt Extract plus a calcium tablet no choice about it, as for Spam if it looked like food and put before us we ate it, I was built like a racing snake back then, I can't remember a fat kid at school Do you remember tins of streaky bacon or tinned dried egg? My father said the dried egg was disgusting. In Outer London and later in Cardiff he said he saw lots of people kept bantam hens and in villages beyond all sorts, chickens, ducks …

The suggestion that the empire will fall because we are short on peppers and cucumbers seems a bit of a stretch to me.

Why do we need tomatoes and other salad food in February? - they use to be seasonal.

The answer is it hasn't been — but you needn't worry about the UK sinking from plentiful cheap food, either home-grown or imported. It will more likely sink from dissent around GB and Northern Ireland while the Tories try to agree among themselves and the DUP a trade and continuity agreement for the whole of the UK with the EU, and the majority of the population struggles with rising costs.
All the current indications are that we're likely to have a Labour-led administration after a general election. Had Miliband, Corbyn or McDonnell been Labour leader, I'd be worried. But at the moment, a Starmer administration could be the shock the Tories need to regain some sanity...

Why do we need tomatoes and other salad food in February? - they use to be seasonal. The stupidity is there's strawberries in our local stores.
I've no objection to imported fruit and veg but, for some varieties, the local produce is just so much better and not needed out of season...
