Funny how the Europhiles are not leaping to the defence of the EU in this thread to tell us how lovely EU food standards are. It's not that long ago they were telling us Brexit meant chlorinated chicken and all manner of horrors in the kitchen. Now look at the situation. eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:32023R0005

It wasn't about ingesting chlorine. It was about US food production standards being so low that they had to bleach chicken after it had been through the production process. It was too high in salmonella so it had to be chemically disinfected. EU standards are much higher and don't require chlorination.

Yes, some salads are washed with bleach. This is because there is no real alternative though not because standards are too low like US meat production.

It was never about the chlorine itself. It was about the fact that chlorine was necessary to remove the bacteria from the faeces the chickens were covered in as a result of the conditions in which they are kept.

This is because there is no real alternative though not because standards are too low like US meat production. EU food standards allow proven carcinogens in meat and now they're including insects which have never been part of the European diet and which we have no idea of the long term effects of. www.theguardian.com/society/2022/dec/27/too-much-nitrite-cured-meat-brings-clear-risk-of-cancer-say-scientistsIt's high time we banned those carcinogens in our own food. We're out. Independent food standards are one of the benefits. We should ban known carcinogens in meat. What will the EU's process for ensuring food hygiene with insects?
It really is a stupid and dangerous thing to consider.

And we should not go down the route of allowing insects on the plate. Not only are there hygiene issues and also squeamish issues. Insects are not part of our natural diet, enzymes are extremely important in breaking down food properly. If our enzymes don't work on insect matter, then there's a risk of increased dietary ailments in the population.

Nobody objects to the Americans chlorine washing chicken. It's the reasons it's necessary for them to chlorine wash chickens that are the cause for concern. You know ... the fact that they're generally covered in their own faeces at the point of slaughter.
