It's very simple really. The system is corrupt. I thought you might like to hear this from a British researcher. This chap is a research scientist in chemistry and he lists the common ways in which corruption in these institutions is rife. He lists them as nine distinct scams.

Chemistry?
Barely a science, more like advanced cookery.
The miserable wretch is lucky to have a job and won't have one as soon as they start using disposable test tubes and don't need him to wash up.

Are you some kind of dustman? Chemistry is one of the hard science, as distinct from what is called social science, e.g. 'political science'. If you think it is so easy I'll be testing your knowledge in due course.

Chemistry is probably today's version of alchemy — pyrites and all that.
Physics is what should count more — but there's also the whole raft of Life Sciences, their applications and derived concepts...

"All science is either physics or stamp collecting" Ernest Rutherford. The Baron would probably prefer to quote Margaret Rutherford...

I only know because he mentioned he had written some paper on "nano technology" which is a posh name for chemistry. Chemistry is a collective word and can cover biochemistry too. See if you can work out the mathematics of protein folding. It really is a bit more than cookery.

A nano is 10^-9, which suggests that he wrote a very, very small paper

Very small papers never get published. I reminded him of the 3/4 of a side of A4 which Peter Higgs submitted to a reputable journal. They rejected it, but the Nobel Prize committee accepted it. I bet the reviewers of that journal feel mightily dumb in retrospect.

Loads of comments in the comments section appear to be from those in academia. It does not look good in the sense the others are pretty much all in agreement with the OP. I've kind of known this for years, but having it all read out to you at least reassures me my feelings were not misjudged. I've seen papers with 20 or more names on. A lot of research papers are tedious and of low value.
