Here’s a strange thing. If you rearrange the letters ‘ Ben Fogle is God ‘ then arrange them back again , it reads ‘ Ben Fogle is God’…………………spooky.. The ways of Ben Fogle are not our ways.

The argument that the world is evil therefore there is no God is as old as the Universe. I mentioned in the other God thread about there being God, and everything else, when there is no distiction. If i created a painting, is that not me? So people lie, cheat, kill, hate etc, and? Oh, God does not exist. In the animal world, its eat and be eaten, humans are an improvement arnt they? Some people are innately evil, as some others are not, some become evil, others become saints etc. The ability to create is vast. What is this thing, and if we are a part of God, how are we connected to God. ? Look at evil empires, the nazis were amazing, there must be dozens similar. How did Hitler do it? What you mention is small stuff, amateurs. What if they turned their minds to morality?, good things, creativity, healing.? Id like to remind you of where you are, this planet is a shithole, with suffering everywhere, be glad its not you, and if it is, it could be worse. Whatever your suffering is, your getting yours, and me mine, its a world of cause and effect. Be merciful, the person you are hurting is you, if you stay your mouth or hand, you will be spared. Judge and you will be judged. If we are part of God, then surely that makes sense. You have side stepped my offer of you confessing, you need to dont you? For you to whine about others when you are as bad shows well, its not good is it. And yet you have an ability to do what you want, but you dont know how, whether its a nazi empire, or the promised land. For me to tell you how will be casting seed on barren ground. Find out for yourself, its taken me a lifetime. Just know its out there. Hitler knew how, but for ill, Mother Theresa, countless others. God, the Universe, eternity, infinity, is trying to show us the way home. I saw Ben Fogle last night exploring the Scottish Islands, mountains, vast seascapes, the sky, a vast dome. There, there is God. How do your beliefs differ from pantheism? And, if you are a pantheist, can you really call yourself a Christian, given that Christianity rejects pantheism?

Believe what you want. Just DONT mix it up with politics. That is the fastest way to a fascist theocracy possible. Think Iran and Afghanistan and run. and saudi arabia. even some buddhist states like burma

There, there is God. I fear you misunderstand I do not say the world is evil therefore there is no god I say the world is evil and filled with exceptionally nasty things therefore your god, IF he exists, which he might although I doubt it, is unworthy of my worship. I also fear I misunderstood your point regarding confession. I admit it is a good thing to not keep stuff bottled up, but the last person I would consider a recipient of any such confession would be a man or woman of the cloth, least of all a catholic one, the Catholic Church having made such a money spinner out of indulgences. I recall that when my fathers best mate from school finished digging up Fred Wests garden, he did two things. First, he handed in his notice and then he called dad. Dad came round my place and took away every bottle of the amontillado casked single barrel Oban scotch I’d bought a few years prior to that and the two spent all weekend drinking it. I have a few such ‘confessors’ on speed dial myself but no divine being is involved.

And our ways are not the ways of Ben Fogle. This cannot be a coincidence and is unequivocal proof of something or the other.

John, im saying that people who are evil are also God, there is no distinction, on a path to something better or worse. Confession, apart from atonement, is keeping yourself grounded, in touch with yourself. At the start of the catholic mass there is a prayer, i think its called the I confess, that it repeats its my fault my fault my fault.
The bible repeats over and over, that we , humans, are a part of God, with a godlike ability to create or destroy, and that ability is far far beyond what we think it is. We just dont know it.
It does throw up a depressing thought, that in the life to come, here or in the spirit, that the eternal war between good and evil is eternal, and that this world is deciding whos side your on. Thats not the bible thats me. That humans who are evil cannot be totally controlled and be limited, because they, and we are eternal.
In science, eternity seems to exist. So, the existence of evil has an explanation, and maybe we should be grateful its not worse. Maybe it is in other spheres. Like Mr Putin, you cant do that and expect God, or higher beings to be impressed, and greet you in heaven with a cup of tea and a Rich tea.
Near death experiencers report the existence of hell. I read a book published in the 18 century, outlining life after death in a mathematical way with tables.
The important thing is that death in the spirit does indeed exist. If a soul continues in evil ways, stretching into the far distance of time, absent of self reflection conscience etc, then it will die.
Not in an easy way, like humans, but in a way that encompasses millenia slowly, and is dreadful in its presentation, and is horrific. As below, so above. Im referring to the Universe, and all thats in it. Fred West etc, i dont want to downplay your fathers best mates experience, but, Fred Wests are ten a penny, ive read casenotes of inmates in Rampton special hospital, bad people are everywhere, many well disguised.
This world is evil, no doubt about it, with many creative ways of performing such, no argument at all.

I don’t need a god to know right from wrong. I think I’d start there. Having a god has never stopped men from doing evil things anyway. Perhaps it did help to prevent many individuals from giving into the temptations of evil. You may also find that a lot of self-identifying Christians disagree with the institution.

I saw Ben Fogle last night exploring the Scottish Islands, mountains, vast seascapes, the sky, a vast dome. There, there is God. Ben Fogle is God? I understand that when discussing spiritual matters, some people feel so uncomfortable that they have to divert away from the discussion ASAP. Treating that considered post by piglet in that way was just damn rude. I see there is a bit of crossover with the "God" thread and this one, so I'll have a look at that one, too.

Treating that considered post by piglet in that way was just damn rude. I thought it was lovely. Anyway, I brought the discussion back on track with a point about pantheism. Thanks for your feedback.

One interesting thing about good and evil is that we do not appear to be able to reproduce (replace) them using reason alone.

One interesting thing about good and evil is that we do not appear to be able to reproduce (replace) them using reason alone. The word Good has an interesting etymology. It originally meant powerful (in the sense that anything the powerful did was good). Notions of good and evil vary with time and place (obviously). Logic is eternal (a priori in the Kantian sense), so I suppose it stands to reason that it can't be made to chime with fluctuating notions such as good and evil. That said, I think Aristotle attempted to use logic to discover the 'good life'.

Believe what you want. Just DONT mix it up with politics. That is the fastest way to a fascist theocracy possible. Think Iran and Afghanistan and run. Isn't religion — and the choice not to have or follow one — part of politics anyway?
In the UK, why is the House of Lords made up of Lords spiritual and temporal, why is the head of state also the supreme governor of the Church of England, why are there prayers in Parliament everyday?
Why are there so many political parties with names or policies that nod towards religion — eg, Christian Democrats, Muslim Democrats, BJP or the Indian People’s Party the Hindu nationalist party, etc.
And without Jews, there'd be no Israel — though I'm not altogether certain if current Jewish political hardliners are the result of, or the cause of, today's Israel...

Notions of good and evil, in a secularist setting, are difficult to pin down, are they not? A drug dealer who kills an opponent for poaching his patch is considered evil by the majority of people. The drug dealing gangs might say "They deserved it" justifying or even congratulating those actions. On a less serious scale, someone shooting a hen harrier for food will be breaking the law. Is it an act of evil, or an act of good? They eat the bird.
100 years ago homosexuality was illegal. Now it is not. Which is correct? Is it the most modern decision that trumps the old ones, and why?
With respect to sex, the age of consent in some counties is 13 and in others 18. Which is correct, and does breaking this law in a loving relationship make the act evil? Does the consensus make something good or evil? I don't think so. Mankind makes rules, but they are not just based on good and evil.

I think you are engaging in a bit of conflation. The English word still has a bundle of meanings including best, fixed, fit, ready and completed. Looking at the etymology of evil may be a better bet. Re Aristotle, you can recognise what was driving at even if it can't be put into logic or maths

Notions of good and evil, in a secularist setting, are difficult to pin down, are they not? Notions of good and evil are difficult to pin down in every setting. Hence the different conceptions of good and evil among different religions and the different interpretations of religious texts within the same religion.
