We have all heard eco maniacs waxing lyrical about the amount of wonderful free green energy we produce and use, I've heard figures of 30%, 40% and even 50% of our energy is from renewables. Well I've just had a shufty at the National Grid to see how much of our power is currently being generated from renewables and in spite of the £ billions the government are spending on this net-zero nonsense I wasn't surprised to see that power to the grid this morning was 15% renewable, 65.1% fossil fuels, and 19.8% other sources (Nuclear & Biomass) These figs will of course change with demand, but as you can see without fossil fuels this country would grind to a halt. Yet eco mentalists demand we should stop burning fossil fuels! Go figure.
And in other news: in order to keep the lights on in this country, three days ago Rishi Sunak and Joe Biden signed an energy deal in which the US will supply the UK with 10 billion cubic metres of shale gas over the next year. According to eco mentalists buying it from the US is better than producing our own and being self sufficient. Again, go figure.

Just for interest. The National grid is currently receiving just 5.8% from renewables, 24.1% from other sources (Nuclear and biomass) and 72.3% from fossil fuels. grid.iamkate.com/

This is where our reliance on renewables really comes unstuck. It's below zero here and there's not a breath of wind and there's full cloud cover. People can be very stupid.

Despite several reminders al I've had from them is obfuscation or completely ignoring my repeated question. Fast forward to Truss's first PMQs when a Tory MP asked her the same question which she replied that she would deal with it in her following day statement. Well she didn't even mention it so I wrote to the MP who asked her the question whether he was happy with Truss's lack of response; that was in mid-September. After continuing lack of response I continued to ask the question, then suddenly near the end of November, I get an email telling me I should write to my own MP. Since then I have written to Shapps asking him why the difference between petrol and diesel used to be around 6p, is now as much as 20p in places; no answer from him. Just over a year ago I asked another MP a question; an acknowledgement of receipt is the only response I got. I could write to Sunak buit I doubt an answer to my questions will be forthcoming.

Totally agree - making us dependent on expensive windmills and foreign sources of energy was criminal, those involved should be held to account.

why is it interesting Pat? - she simply uses the data from BMRS like all the other sites that show the same information.

I think the main reason is that the govt signed a lot of CFD contracts that effectively guarantee them the same price as they pay for gas - so they're making out like bandits now. Why they signed these contracts I don't know but the price of renewables will always be roughly the same as fossil fuels because of the way the market works. When a renewable producer bids for a govt contract what they do (obviously) is bid the highest price they think they can get away with, and that price is just slightly lower than for fossil fuels. It's no good the ecomentalists saying that wind costs 1/9th of fossil fuel energy (which is highly dubious anyway) because - until there is competition among the renewable sector - they will charge the same as fossil fuels.

Oh it's not that I can't see why renewables and fossil fuels will come out the same, it's that the companies supplying renewable produced power give the impression it's cheaper and better for the environment. Looking at the National Grid figures, I'm struggling to see how any company can guarantee supplying purely green energy especially in the light of what I read this morning that two fossil fuel plants well be asked to fire up to meet demands for electricity. www.aol.co.uk/national-grid-asks-two-coal-091634469.html
