To be fair I was in favour of the deal as I understood it when it was released a couple of months ago . Returning the Islands to the people seemed the right thing to do . Giving them away to Mauritius though is a completely different matter and Farage is right , a new deal taking into consideration what the Islanders want should be made

Giving them away to Mauritius though is a completely different matter and Farage is right , a new deal taking into consideration what the Islanders want should be made The argument over the chagos islands effectively goes back to the sixties , when the british ethnically cleansed the chagossians off the islands to make way for a base. In modern times , its went to the UN , where they had a vote on returning the islands to the chagossians , and the world unanimously voted against britian. I think you are right. Essentially the islands should go back to the chagossians , but for some weird reason ( speculation abounds) starmer has given chagos to Mauritius without consulting the natives. The incoming yank president trump and his advisers are rightly pissed off , calling the chagos islands as the most important base to America in the entire world. So not sure how this will end , but again , starmers looks weak and stupid over his entire handling of the affair , not to mention corrupt , as he is close friends with Mauritius chief legal negotiator. I think trump will put starmer and labour in their place and the lease deal ripped up in his face.

And give them an MP so they have a voice in Parliament.

im assuming vinny means the uk parliament. British crown dependencies and overseas territories are not part of the uk state .They tend to be self governing. , with their own legislatures.

And they do have some representation through all party parliamentary groups along with the ability to petition the government . Not much good with zero population though

Not much good with zero population though vinny just doesn't like the idea of self governing legislatures .Despite his anti brussells rants , he himself mirrors the Brussels zealots in his centrism. I think the parliamentary groups are over rated. very much so.

All involved will have had months to get their arguments in order and our MP's will hopefully all be up to speed on the consequences of their vote . I can not see in a democracy that the Chaggasians (hope thats right) will not be front and centre on any decision or a major influence on how the MP's vote on this . Lets hope they do the right thing
