Many/most of the remaining wholly-owned post offices are to be either closed or transferred to private ownership under franchises. Already most of the 11,500 post offices around the U.K. are privately operated, with many in stores like WHSmith, local convenience stores and other outlets — there once was one in a pub!!!
Not only will this mean that Crown Office counter staff will now have to face the prospect of providing reasonable service, but 1000 or more of the Post Office HQ staff will also be culled.
Not before time.
Why is/was it that British Airways, British Rail, British Telecom (ex Post Office Telephones/GPO), and other govt-owned operations, are so snooty and think themselves either above us other mere mortals, or still part of the government secret service? That’s why the Horizon fiasco happened — the Post Office could not be wrong!
I like my (privately-owned) local post office now it’s open seven days a week. The previous PO-owned branch was open just five and one half days — the building looks like it’s now becoming retail, offices and living accommodation.
I hope The Post Office network can now realise the opportunities offered by closing banks, insurance brokers, and people’s access to local authority and government services…

Closing banks closed opportunities. A local solution involved creating a banking hub with 5 different banks using the hub over 5 different days . Iirc there will be Postboffice services there and a privately owned post office down the road.

Full list of 115 Post Office branches closing in major shake-up - is YOUR local affected?..... The Post Office has confirmed it will be axing 115 branches and hundreds of jobs in a major blow to Britain's struggling high street. The embattled postal giant said a significant number of jobs from its 1,000-strong head office staff were now at risk. And 115 major city centre Crown Post Offices will be scrapped, in a move that critics fear could leave pensioners and the vulnerable isolated. The news was broken by Post Office chairman Nigel Railton shortly after 9am today, during a meeting with staff. However, some furious front-line postal workers have told MailOnline they were left in the dark about the news, and claimed 'no announcement' had been made, in a move that was 'extremely upsetting' for staff. The struggling firm is looking to offload the 115 most unprofitable sites from its 11,500-strong network. The shake-up could see the branches transferred to retail partners or postmasters or shut for good. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14076943/full-list-post-office-closures-britain.html
