It's been reported that during a telephone conversation between Trump and Starmer, Trump said 'the UK will always have a friend in me'. So bearing this in mind, should Starmer grab this olive branch and pursue a closer relationship including trade deals that will benefit both the US and the UK but will inevitably annoy the EU. Or should he turn his back on Trump and remain an EU yes man?

The point of Brexit was that we could make friends with both. Hopefully Starmer will try that.

If Trump pursues a new protectionist tariff regime it would be terrible news for the UK. Only a Free Trade Agreement will protect us and apparently there's one on the shelf that was ready to be signed during Trumps last presidency but after the last US election in 2020, Brit hating Biden scrapped it. A free trade agreement with the US would undoubtedly annoy the EU, the Tories were less concerned about this. Labour on the other hand, I'm not so sure. I think Starmer may put UK/EU relations first.

Got to be the US - the EU economy is stagnating. Thats if you want improved living standards of course.

So the EU it is then . We can still be friends with the US hopefully.

Got to be the US - the EU economy is stagnating. Thats if you want improved living standards of course. Precisely. Why anchor yourself to a struggling economy. The EU is yesterdays news. We should definately look across the pond.

We should definately look across the pond. If we had anchored our-self to the US rather than Europe over the last 60 years we would each be $20k better off. The poorest State in the US is now richer per capita than the UK.
