13 things the government and the industry don't want you to know about smart metres. Anyone watch this? I thought it was quite interesting. Several things came out in the programme such as... Smart meters will not save you money. Smart meters are paid for by the consumer, whether they are aware of it or not. Smart meters are not free [£250 per unit, £80 per hour to fit] Most smart meters will need replacing by 2030, the cost of which will be picked up by the consumer. Even though having a smart meter is supposed to be voluntary, the industry will start penalising consumers who refuse to have one fitted. Smart meters do spy on consumers, etc etc. Other highlights in the video... www.channel5.com/show/smart-meters-should-you-get-one

My smart meters saves me a fortune because it allows me to have an EV tariff, so all my electric between midnight and 7am is 6.5p per k/w.
In real numbers that's £4.22 to fill the car up... and it does 265 miles.
Dishwasher and washing machine are on a timer so they cost next to nothing to run either.

That is bullshit, and I have given you one example of why it is bullshit.

That is bullshit, and I have given you one example of why it is bullshit. Having a smart meter fitted does not save money. A smart meter makes it easier to track consumption, it does not reduce consumption. The only way a smart meter can save you money is if the consumer reduces consumption and to reduce consumption, unless you're an imbecile, you don't need a bloody smart meter. Here to help.

To my memory you never needed a smart meter to get economy seven or similar, in some areas they flicked a switch to cheaper overnight tarifs but the precise timing was never known. Been around for 50 years or thereabouts to my recall.

Yes, they were switched by a radio signal which is called the radio teleswitch service signal. It is being turned off on 30th June next year. It uses the BBC 198 kHz transmitter (Long Wave) which is also used for Radio 4 from Droitwich.
