Around 1,100 prisoners have started to be released from prison early as part of a plan to ease overcrowding in prisons. An inmate was reunited with his children who ran at him with a big hug outside HMP Swaleside, in Kent, while another prisoner was welcomed with an embrace as he was picked up in a black Rolls Royce by a group of men in matching hoodies. A number of men could be seen walking down the road with bin bags slung over their shoulders, one also shaking hands with a security guard, leaving the prison estates on the Isle of Sheppey, which is home to HMP Swaleside, HMP Standford Hill and HMP Elmley. A white Bentley and black Mercedes G-wagon were among the cars seen coming to pick up people outside the prisons. One inmate from HMP Swaleside said ‘big up Keir Starmer’, another inmate *Daniel Dowling-Brooks, 29, who was jailed for seven years for kidnapping and GBH*, was greeted by family and friends outside the prison gates. He said the first thing he would do is ‘go to McDonald’s... metro.co.uk/2024/10/22/1-000-leave-prison-early-second-round-releases-21840187/*Labour said only non violent criminals will be released early*. Shabana Mahmood, Labour's Secretary of State for Justice, said early releases will free up 12,000 much needed prison places. I'm sure steve will be along shortly to fight for their cause....How many of the last lot they released got banged up again the same day they were released? This morning Christopher Hope for GB News asked a Downing street spokesman how many of the 1,700 criminals who were released early last month have reoffended, the spokesman refused to comment. Chris Hope then asked him if there would be another batch of criminals released early next month, again he refused to comment. It would seem as far as releasing dangerous criminals from prison is concerned, the government are being rather tight lipped.

I wonder if criminals who were released last month and recalled to prison for reoffending, were released again today? Sounds daft but we are talking about this Labour government, anything is possible.

Want a laugh? Honestly you couldn't make it up.
As a GB News reporter was talking to camera outside a prison, an inmate appeared on top of a razor wire topped fence and jumped into a car park where a black car was apparently waiting for him, he jumped into the car which then sped away. Prison staff say they are currently holding a roll call, lol.

In theory they should not be, but I would not be surprised. 2TK's spokeswankers are trying to say the 50% ISH rate of return of the offenders released is typical for release programmes. which suggests to me we need to be a lot nastier to the convicted.

Someone mentioned earlier on GB News that 57% of criminals reoffend, which suggests to me and call me old fashioned, that prison is not harsh enough. If prison holds no fear for the repeat offender it's pointless. To be an effective deterrent prison must provide an austere and strict environment as it did years ago when recidivism was not such a problem. In saying that I'm not advocating a cruel penal system, but I do believe an austere and above all a strict penal system is necessary to stop repeat offenders regarding prison as little more than an occupational hazard.

The United States has a much more harsh prison system - it also has one of the highest recidivism rates in the world, with 80% of people released from prison reoffending within 10 years.

Two of Chris Kaba's '67 gang' nightclub shooting accomplices had only just been freed from prison spells after being found guilty of county lines drug dealing. Shemiah Bell and Connel Bamgboye were out on licence at the time they were with Mr Kaba when he fired at a gang rival in Hackney, east London, on August 30 2022. Father-of-one Mr Kaba, 24, was shot dead six days later in Streatham, south London, by firearms Sergeant Martyn Blake, who was cleared on Monday of his murder. It was only after the acquittal that a judge yesterday ruled details of Kaba's criminal past could be publicly revealed - including the fact he would have been charged with attempted murder over the Hackney shooting had he lived. Bell and Bamgboye were previously jailed in April this year in connection with Mr Kaba's shooting of '17 gang' member Brandon Malutshi, 25 - as was another accomplice, Marcus Pottinger..... www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13991205/Chris-Kaba-accomplices-just-released-jail-county-lines-drug-dealing.html

If you are trying to say that tougher action against the convicted is no guarantee of their turning from crime, well I suppose I'd have to agree. The problems I see are that too few criminals are collared, and too little is spent on those who we might hope would respond positively to whatever we could do to prevent reoffending.
