Anyone watching? The debate starts now, and there will be questions from the audience. Jenrick is going first and has just started...

Well... having watched the debate and listened carefully to both Jenrick then Badenoch who are both good candidates, Badenoch won and that's what the studio audience thought too. She came across as a straight talking no nonsense person who doesn't tolerate fools gladly, in fact she reminded me of Thatcher in some ways, which will thrill lefties.

Thanks for the link RR, I wouldn't have known it was on otherwise. Couldn't tune in till about 8.15pm by which time Kemi was already in full flow. Can't make a judgement on Jenrick as I didn't hear him, but can't imagine him being any match for the always impressive Kemi.
Not sure how much importance to attach to this contest. There'll be ample time for the Tory MP's to overthrow any current leader and put who they want in charge in time for the next General Election ..... and after 5 years of Starmer, Ange, Yvette, Lammy etc, won't Britain be way beyond anything that can be saved via the ballot box anyway ?

I think whoever wins will probably take the party into the next election, the parliamentary conservative party are very aware how the public feel about changing leader every five minutes. Ref the protagonists, they both came across well, but Jenrick, for some reason lol, seems to be more centre right now than he was as a minister. He's playing to the audience. Badenoch on the other hand, I don't think she's changed. She is definately a centre right Conservative and the best candidate. If Tory members vote for her, I just may return to the Tory fold.

Pragmatist Kemi Badenoch wins Tory leadership TV showdown by a distance.... Before the Tory leadership TV showdown with rival Robert Jenrick, she'd declared: "I'm running a grassroots campaign, not a TV campaign or a media campaign." She was the frontrunner, after all, and according to conventional wisdom, had the most to lose from round-the-clock media interviews - which Mr Jenrick has done - and TV debates - which Mr Jenrick has demanded..... But in this TV leadership event in front of an audience of 400 Conservative Party members, hosted by GB News, she was the winner by a considerable distance and will now be odds-on favourite to become the next Tory leader. This is likely to have been the only TV event with the two leadership candidates, given that a BBC programme proposed for next week is now in doubt because the Tories want to charge the audience for tickets.....

Jonksy
Just to add a bit of further detail ..... as Jonksy's Sky News link states: 'in this TV leadership event in front of an audience of 400 Conservative Party members, hosted by GB News, she was the winner by a considerable distance and will now be odds-on favourite to become the next Tory leader'. In other words the audience was made up exclusively from members of the electorate for the Leadership contest.
The BBC will not agree to similar. They are insisting upon selecting their own audience, obviously with an intention to bring in people with no entitlement to participate in the ballot. Kemi smells a rat, and has said 'not bloody likely' or words to that effect. It's probably a wise decision not to play into the hands of the BBC, who are hardly untainted when it comes to the issue of audience composition manipulation for their alleged own Leftist ends. If you're already well ahead, keeping a good distance between yourself and the BBC's dirty tricks department is surely an eminently sensible course of action.

Interesting that the party rather quietly had the rules to overthrow their leader changed just before the winner was announced. One could be forgiven for thinking they're planning ahead expecting to have to head off such a coup. After all, it's not as if the party ever ignored it's members in choosing their leader is it ?
