I was surprised to find that I had to request a CD player as an extra in my current car — though I didn't delve into why at the time. But I now hear that many car makers are no longer including CD players as standard. It seems the CD is regarded as old technology, and space is needed for newer additional systems. Or is it, for some, just to cut costs?
I know the CD sales have regularly fallen for 20 years or so, but just recently they've been rising, and it's the 18 to 24-year-olds that have helped the increase as they match the 45 to 54 age group. So is it too early to write the CD off?
I know many people like to assemble their own play lists from streaming services and put them on memory cards and sticks, but I'd miss putting on my favourite 40 minutes or so as I drive...
(Red might be happy to see GB News is au courant with this)

(Red might be happy to see GB News is au courant with this) I don't know how it is for cars, but the favourite these days seems to be a wireless Bluetooth interface on audio systems. Perhaps a portable CD player has this feature. China is bound to have such a gadget.

I was aware that CD's are considered old fashioned, although I hadn't seen he link in the OP before now. I'll be honest, I cant remember the last time I played a CD in the car, I always listen to the radio.

The shoegun I had before my present nissan outlaw had a multi system installed and you only had to play a CD once and it recorded it and stored it so the actual CD was no longer required. It was also the same for a DVD...

Further checking up on this shows vinyl sales are also increasing and have found themselves back in the basket of goods used to assess inflation.
Also, there used to be 45 single and EP players for cars — who knew? I’ve heard of eight-track car stereo (they looked like a mechanical nightmare), and some of my previous cars had cassette players, and we’ve still got some old tapes.
Now there are companies offering to supply and fit vehicle CD players for around £500. Wonder if this will be a good business.
We’ve got about 200 LPs, and we play them occasionally. They may deliver better/truer reproduction, but the main thing that still appeals is the cover artwork. CDs, and cassettes before, often carry an attempt at interesting artwork, but they’re not as accomplished and interesting…

Indeed. For obvious reason a vinyl record player for cars wasn’t practical. Possibly for the same reason that I ruined daughter’s CD by playing a CD player on top of a shaking print finishing machine. Eight tracks sounded far better than cassettes but the cartridges were expensive and cassettes got a lot better, sooner. I had a CD player in my last car but not in this one .

I wont be buying a new car because of this fact. They started seriously fazing out CD players way back in 2014 … (sorry, this discussion comes 10 years late).
It all happened shortly after Apple gave drives the boot from computers…. in a conspiracy to kill the CD industry … which preserved library data more securely and better than the Cloud … means we are all more vulnerable to Deep State deliberately crashing the Internet now. … the losses will not be just with music. … but archiving data too.
CD’s are better quality sound … and the car is where I play my large collection … easy to grab a handful … and refresh my journey entertainment … without having to download to laptop, upload from laptop … drop files onto sticks … even burn compilation discs … time consuming and tedious.
Computers are a pain … I’ve wasted much of my precious life with computer issues/printer issues.
The backlash is here … now …. and motor manufacturers watching electric vehicle sales tanking … and computer manufacturers watching laptop, tablet and mobile sales dropping …will go bust not listening to what intelligent customers want … flexibility and choice. Good riddance.
Technology is no long a priority for quality of life.
Buy retro … go retro.

It is to create a sound that sells, and that sound is from Oasis. Ever since they have copied the same production techniques with all manner of effects to do hard clipping so it adds non-musical harmonics.

Why would you want a CD player in a car, or even at home anymore when you can stream any music you want for a tenner a month?
Also you can stream podcasts, audio books and niche online radio stations etc.

Streamed music is ever so slightly out of key to foil piracy. Better off with physical copies of music and that way musicians get decent royalties. Streaming pays them peanuts.

Also you can stream podcasts, audio books and niche online radio stations etc. Sounds wonderful … until the Internet connection fails. … and what happens when the Deep State, a Google Texas Management software cock-up or a solar flare crashes the Internet?? … and nuclear war has you trying to survive underground … living in a DUMB? A CD collection then will be the wisest choice. …👍 I have a portable DAB player in my car which loses signal in certain areas … If you stream Spotify etc through your phone into your car system on the move … do you experience drop out every time you hit a mobile signal blackout spot??
