Bentley, are you a 'cockeny'?.. I was born in Forest Gate hospital and lived in Canning Town until I was 18 months when we moved out near Southend due to my late brother having acute asthma. Both my Mum and Dad came from Canning Town . technicality I need to have been born within the sound of Bow bells to be a cockney but I’m from the East End . I had the pleasure to do my 5 year apprenticeship in a factory that was in the exact place where the Olympic stadium now stands . So I have had a lot of exposure to propa geezers.😁 Sorry to hear about your brother. The 'cockneys' I knew weren't born within the sound of Bow bells, but they sounded cockney. I thought it was saafend? You must be a posh cockney.

The banter , the humour and the piss taking was off the clock . yeah I lived just a few miles outside of Southend . My Mum was a proper East End girl dumped into the relative countryside. Incidentally my mum and Dad went back to Canning Town by train to reminisce.A black man made a move to mug them . They were in their 70s. They never went back .

I don't know London, it's been years since I've been there but back in the day and I'm talking late 1970's & early 80's, I visited Tottenham, Croydon and Southall. My memories are vague, but I seem to remember Tottenham was a bit rough, Croydon was OK and Southall was little India. I suppose today, Tottenham is a bit rougher, Croydon is black gang central, and Southall is big India. How close am I?..

I worked nights in Edmonton between 2000 - 2005 and witnessed the battle of IKEA www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1483272/Battle-of-Ikea-20-hurt-as-frenzied-mob-fights-over-49-sofas-on-opening-night.htmlI was warned not to venture far from the factory due to the risk of mugging but we creeped over to watch the fun. Just before I left …an Asian chappie randomly killed a few people near my factory . I often gave my mate a lift to Tottenham Hale station which was a few miles away . It was a shit hole . I lived on Canvey Island at that time . It was fucking paradise compared with North London .

Such a shame. The lad from Southall was clued up I knew him for years, he showed me the bright lights of the west end. I remember he knew the underground like the back of his hand. I was 18 or 19 at the time and a wide eyed country kid, I'd never seen anything like it, but it was exiting. The few lads I knew from London all went back home after the army, but none of them stayed long. Within a couple of years they all moved out of London and not down the road either. Shropshire Lincolnshire and Norfolk. I see them all occasionally, and they all regret what's happened to London.

East Enders moved to Dagenham and Ilford until the crime rate made life intolerable and they moved further out. My father in law moved from Enfield to Cambridgeshire 35 years ago because of the crime . White flight is real .
