Teachers will be allowed to work from home under Labour plans to tackle the recruitment crisis in schools.
Headteachers will be told they can let their staff do marking and planning away from the classroom. Teachers already have free periods to mark homework and to plan lessons, and Bridget Phillipson (Known to her friends as Barking Bridget) the Education Secretary, wants to make it easier for them to work from home in these periods. It is hoped it will help stem the tide of women leaving the profession when they have children. In the academic year 2022/23, about 32,000 left. The plan would allow such teachers to take their free periods in blocks at the end or the beginning of the day, enabling them to work from home while looking after children, or to complete the school run. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/09/17/labour-plan-teachers-to-be-allowed-to-work-from-home/Teachers working from home to ease recruitment crisis! Have you ever heard anything so stupid? What's next? Maybe this government will realise it's cheaper to get rid of schools altogether and have remote learning. Hey don't laugh, I'm talking about this Labour government. Anything is possible.

Teachers working from home is insanity. Teachers should be in school not sitting at home teaching from behind a computer screen. If the covid lockdown taught us anything, it taught us that remote learning does not work.

The suggestion isn't that teachers should teach from behind a computer screen at home, yet. But you can bet it's been discussed behind closed doors. This is the thin end of the wedge. In my opinion.

If it is the thin edge of the wedge to remote learning then it’s not good but if it’s a matter of marking , paper work and planning then I’m all for it . Especially if it helps families with kids .

Well the OP seems to suggest that there is room for more and I’m not sure whether any homework for teachers was paid in the past. I have teachers in the family but they are leftie lovies so I don’t talk to them much.

This is an entirely new idea.
Teachers have never marked their pupils work or prepared lessons at home.

Our Daughter works as a Manager for a large school also a very close friends of ours was a Teacher in a large School in East London, she and other Teachers she worked alongside for years did take their Pupils homework to mark them, they did some in school if they had a spare period and not in class
They also compile reports on the progress each year reports for the Education Authority all done at home which they were not paid for
