Seems the Germans are getting tired of illegal's flooding into the country - only for 6 months at present although I can see them extending it once in place.

Excellent news. Germany on Monday moved to tighten border controls and curb irregular migrant inflows after a series of suspected Islamist attacks sparked public anger and piled pressure on the government. Temporary controls would be extended to Germany's land borders with all nine of its neighbours, the interior ministry said in a statement. The increased controls would limit migration and "protect against the acute dangers posed by Islamist terrorism and serious crime." www.lemonde.fr/en/europe/article/2024/09/09/germany-tightens-border-controls-after-attacks_6725402_143.html#Will Starmer tighten our borders to protect the UK from the "acute dangers posed by Islamist terrorism and serious crime" Or would he consider such a policy to be racist...

The British Isles have had a bloody wide moat around them for millenniums. If that can’t keep migrants in inflatables away, what do you suggest — Nigel breathing beer fumes and cigarette smoke over them as they try to land…?

I couldn't agree more, we do indeed have a moat around us and although in the past that moat has protected us from French and German military dictators I'm afraid it is not nearly wide enough to protect us from modern day dictators in suits.

I'm reminded, yes I'm going off on one here...
...I'm reminded of my days 'abroad' lol, before the fall of communism and before the unelected monstrosity removed all borders and invited Africa to come to Europe, yes indeed they were happy days. In those days you didn't really see immigrants in Germany, a few Turks in one or two towns but generally speaking, life was good.
When I drove back to the UK on leave I would have to show my passport at borders, not the German/Dutch border (Venlo) for some reason, but the Dutch/Belgian border was like something from a cold war spy film. Chicanes to slow traffic down, very visible armed police, barriers across the road, and at night time it was lit up like a Christmas tree. If I went further down to Calais the border checkpoint to get into France was much the same, but I rarely went that way. I usually went to Zeebrugge. Hamburg/Harwich is another story.
There were no border checks from Germany to Denmark, the Norwegians were not so relaxed. And I remember entering Switzerland from France in a snow blizzard on motorbikes, boy that's a story... and they stopped us at the border to check our passports. Because we were so cold we were struggling to open pockets so they invited us in for a cuppa and a warm, and because we were legal everything was fine.
At borders it usually took a few minutes, ten minutes maybe, no biggie. And the reason it was no biggie was because we were 'legal' and this is what some lefties don't seem to understand. Border checks stop crime.
When we voted to leave the unelected monstrosity I listened to people who were utterly clueless, dare I say it... yes OK 'lefties' who claimed that because of Brexit they were no longer allowed to travel to Europe, that travel would be impossible because of Brexit and Europe is now cut off, many tears. And the frightening thing was, these idiots were serious.

An interesting post reminds me of Aardvarks back in the day on a now defunct forum when things turned ugly in Europe think maybe '68 before the Euro and from Southern Europe they had to negotiate and virtually got charity from some Europeans to get their vehicle back across the Channel from the family holiday. Why were you crossing From France into Switzerland in winter somehow I don't think it was for the ski-ing?

Why were you crossing From France into Switzerland in winter somehow I don't think it was for the ski-ing? No not for ski-ing, the top box & panniers weren't quite big enough for ski's, lol. Having crossed from Dover to Zeebrugge (We were posted in the UK at the time) we rode down to Marseille via Paris... going around the Arc de triomphe on motorbikes was a white knuckle ride that matched anything on offer at Alton Towers. Anyhoo, the plan was to get to Marseille, having done that we decided to visit a few old friends in Germany so cut through the western bit of Switzerland via Geneva and into southern Germany. We went on a few road trips and we always rolled out our sleeping bags in a field or woods at the side of the road, we had bivvy bags if the weather was bad. But in Geneva it was so cold we booked into a YMCA for the night. That was the only time we ever stayed in proper, if basic, accommodation. Great times.

That sounds great fun tohugh I was never one to ride bikes, I might have learned in other circumstances. On the YMCA point an old mate used to use this type of accomodation in Scotland as he tried to do the Monroes before getting too pissed off by the Scottish Nationalist crowd.
