From my personal history:
I dated the daughter of a Conservative MP. On one occasion, whilst were were having a brandy together he, after ridiculing the way the House of Commons operates, told me that he only became an MP for the business opportunities that being an MP provided him with. He told me about one £500,000 investment that he'd made that he was particularly chuffed with.
