What is your personal definition of these terms?
Wiki has of left-wing: "Left-wing politics describes the range of political ideologies that support and seek to achieve social equality".
Of right-wing it has: "Right-wing politics is the range of political ideologies that view certain social orders and hierarchies as inevitable, natural, normal, or desirable".
In the late 19th century a University professor described left-wing as being the outlook of criminal minds. He warned that should the left-wing gain power authoritarian regimes would be the result.
There was also a warning that the state education curriculums then being introduced would lead to conflict.
In some ways my thinking is, from the point-of-view of the left-wing, right-wing ... and some of it, from the point if view of the right-wing, left-wing. I can be far-right or far-left depending on what the issue is.

Some say Reds are it, and others say Blues are the team to support. What more can you say, except one is red and the other blue. They have different flags.

Left wing is large government (nanny state), right wing is small government (person responsibility), the other stuff is just nonsense.
Left wing is very appealing because it promotes the idea that if your life is shit it is not your fault.
Most people are down the centre, and will swing to what is the ideologic fashion of the time.

I'd say that fundamental difference is that the Left wing think that they're "right" - by which I mean Morally right. So anyone who doesn't agree with them is morally wrong and therefore "deplorable". But the Right judge things by "what works" - they're pragmatic and they make no claims to the moral high ground. If their policies don't work they're quite happy to change them. The Left are not.
It's tempting to say that the Left believe in the big state while the right prefer a smaller state, but if you look at the Tories and Labour nowadays they're both trying to run much larger states than can be supported by taxation.

Largely the left decry the Nation state and, as you indicate above, the Right believe the Nation state is the only way to make anything work effectively in any fair and democratic way.

I don't think that's a bad way of framing it at all Of course, the left (as a whole) don't really believe in social equality and all left regimes install a cadre of privileged bureaucrats - but that's another matter

Maybe if the left had chosen a different colour their history wouldn't have been steeped in so much blood?

I can be far-right or far-left depending on what the issue is. It depends how you define social equality and whether that is on outcome or opportunity. It is also not clear whether that is individual outcomes or group outcomes and the measuring is of critical importance. Social equality involves taking and giving certainly in the early stages and it is not clear what part family play as social equality depends on the advantages and disadvantages bestowed on one by family. Does one remove family advantage or try to compensate for not having family advantage.

The fundamentals of both cant be argued with, that on the left we need to take care of those that cant look after themselves, and on the right that independance, the rule of law, self determination, and wealth creation, the ability to get ahead is not harmed.
The left has been hijacked so that wrong beliefs, such as equality, business is seen as bad, is used to control society. The creators in society, the money makers, the widget geniusses, should be given free reign, that then benefits all.
Equality is bunk, it does not exist, that will enrage many, but think about it. Whatever your gift is, it should be untilised, whether its cake decoration or faster than light travel theories. There has to be a level of wealth no one falls below, notice the word wealth, we neeed to create that first, not make it out to be evil, like the communists, labour.
