Councils have plenty of money - what they may prioritise spending that money on is an issue for them. Most Labour voters who are struggling to pay council tax are probably unaware that a third of council tax goes on council officers pensions. |

Real budgeting upsets the far left. Watch some Yes Minister. There's always ways to cut the civil service. They don't generate taxes, they're paid from taxes. They're not doctors, nurses, bin men, road sweepers, highways agency engineers who can repair roads, they're paper pushers. We're too officious in this country and that costs taxes. And thanks to Labour we live in a far less secure world than we lived in under John Major too. Should never have appeased Vlad the bomber or invaded Iraq, we should have armed the Chechens and given them the tools to resist invasion. |

I'm not so much bothered by the pensions its more the spending on pet projects by local and central government means that there is no real shortage of money. For example, Cambridge Council spent £24 Million installing 30 sets of traffic lights at one of their roundabouts. The roundabout is the same as thousands of others across the country and worked well for decades. Now the council want to prioritise cycling - which is fair enough, but if they wish to prioritise that issue then the money has to come from other areas - housing, special needs kids, potholes, etc etc. The money is there - it is just what the Politicians decide to prioritise spending it on. |
