Just came down from the office to boil the kettle for the mandatory afternoon cuppa and sat down scrolling through the channels
Came across this re-run from a decade ago on BBC2
Dimbleby sets out in his boat to explore the maritime tradition of Devon and Cornwall.
I tuned in just as he was discussing the Barbary Pirates
Algerian Moslems who raided our Territorial waters by day and coastal villagers by night, abducting English fisherman from ships, and villagers from villages, sailing back to Moslem Algeria and selling their prize catch in slave markets
Dimbleby recounts it got so bad fishermen would not put yo sea until at long last the UK government look a ton, sending a naval force under Lord Exmouth ? To blow hell out of the Moslem stronghold of Algiers, kill the slavers and free the slaves
The raid was an outstanding success, the guy in charge came back a hero and the event was celebrated by the making of a massive gilded trophy depicting the lighthouse of Algiers with its guns, a Moslem slavery having his throat slit by a royal marine landed by the fleet, and an English slave being freed from his chains by another.
Jesus Christ that must have taken a bucket of lemons for the BBC to film. Blaming the nasty Moslems for raiding our coast stealing our people and selling them into slavery and not a chained blackface in sight
