Posters I implore you, especially the... how to word it, the naive left wing element on the forum to watch this short clip. 14 minutes cant be overly taxing on the inexperienced left wing brain, can it...

That's a very interesting clip - a sort of time capsule. I liked the bit where Powell said that he initially thought that our immigrant population would stabilise at about 1 million. I suspect quite a lot of politicians completely underestimated the scale of the potential problem. Tony Blair estimated that, when he opened up the borders to Bulgaria and Romania, only about 13,000 would come here - when in fact there have been several million and counting.
But it's also interesting that Lefties (like Jonathan Miller) still think that there's no problem with vast immigration. Powell is saying that if, say 2/5ths of Birmingham is Asian - people of a different culture and colour - it will change the culture of the city. But Miller just rejects it and says you only object to them because of their colour.
Nothing changes. These arguments are still going on and the views are still polarised.

Cavett looked well out of his depth and although I used to like Millar I found him spouting nonsense here. Powell as usual was rigid in his convictions and knew he had the backing of vast swathes of the British Public even if the political class, the MSN and the great and the good were lined up against him.
