Following proposals from the right-wing Sweden Democrats party, the coalition government is considering enacting a law which will require public employees and others to report efforts by illegal migrants to access public services.
This has predictably provoked protests from unions representing teachers, medical staff and other public employees as well as self-employed professionals such as doctors and dentists, with the proposed scheme being denounced as 'utterly inhumane'.
Campaigners are drawing comparisons with the UK's 'hostile environment' brought in by then-home secretary Theresa May which not only failed in its objectives but ended up in the government having to issue a grovelling apology as well as paying hefty compensation to members of the so-called 'Windrush Generation' who were unable to show they were in the country legally.
