I've been a poll clerk a few times (including at this GE) An ''error' of this size involving over 6500 cast votes (13% of votes cast) is simply not possible at a polling station A Labour-run London council has apologised after it failed to count more than 6,500 votes at the general election. Wandsworth council blamed “a spreadsheet issue” for missing 6,558 votes when it announced that Fleur Anderson, the Labour MP, had retained her Putney seat on July 4.The local authority’s error, which meant 13 per cent of all ballots cast in the seat were not included in official results, was only uncovered on Wednesday when Conservative councillors noticed that the declared results had been quietly changed on the council’s website. The missed votes did not affect the outcome of the election, with the order in which the candidates finished remaining the same

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/07/17/council-apologises-failing-count-more-6500-election-votes/Lucky it did not affect the outcome — but this mistake should be treated at least as seriously as data breaches...

I wonder what would have happened if the result had been affected as there is no process to re-run or change the declared result.

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/07/17/council-apologises-failing-count-more-6500-election-votes/I do not know the process but should not scrutineers be in place from the interested parties and if votes are counted without those scrutineers being present they are inadmissible. Also a declaration of a result surely cannot be changed without some form of public statement. Otherwise the returning officer has issued a false statement or those changing the declared result are committing fraud.

I wonder what would have happened if the result had been affected as there is no process to re-run or change the declared result. From this report it seems it's a shrug , sorry and ''tough luck'' Mr Johnston, 37, of Ruskin Close, High Harrington, was announced as coming last out of nine candidates in the ward, missing out on one of the six available seats. But after questions were raised over the weekend, it was found that Mr Johnston had in fact received 690 votes – 85 more than fellow Labour party member Christine Johanssen, who was announced as winner of the sixth seat. The Moorclose ballot papers had been split between three counting tables but the votes for Mr Johnston counted at one were missed off his total. Andrew Seekings, returning officer, said: “I apologise to the candidates, election agents and voters for this mistake, which resulted from simple human error and was not picked up during the additional checks made at the count. “Unfortunately it was discovered too late to do anything as the result had already been called. “We will be investigating how this could happen to ensure procedures are put in place to prevent it happening again.”

There are a variety of audit type procedures ongoing at the polling station throughout the day to check that number of voters attending matches the number of voting slips issued with a final check at poll close . This paperwork accompanies the boxes to the counting station where I'd have assumed ( obviously wrongly) that further reconciliation automatically takes place. 6500 votes must be several boxes missed
