I don't think we're that far apart: Firearms are not that difficult to train. The difference elsewhere is that officers are recruited with firearms suitability in mind, whereas in the UK they currently are not. It's not insurmountable but it would require a change of mindset by those that currently sit behind desks conducting risk assessments. So don't hold your breath. Some years ago Police Officers were asked if they would be willing to be armed , if I recall correctly the majority said no, IMO a wise move shoot a suspect and months or years of investigation into your actions, and you may end up charged with murder

Historically the UK police weren't armed because it wasn't necessary. Now it is. The way i was told The Peeler’s weren’t armed According to the black museum records, and i don’t remember dates precisely, but i think from the late 1880’s up to before the 1st World War SOME London, police WERE routinely, armed for their protection. That ended after WW1 and returned for some policemen in WW2. So there was actually a time in the past when some policemen were routinely armed and not in the sense firearms officers are now. But i think you are describing the wider position and i agree. And in 1964 if the copper standing outside number ten had one he kept it well hidden from the seven year old me that crossed the road to say hello. There is a smarter way we could deploy. What you do is you use a millimetric scanner. It's a part of the EM spectrum that can see through clothes. Once you capture the image then you feed it into one of those China AI systems that rings alarm bells if it sees a knife or a gun. These devices could be strategically placed so as to make it difficult to carry a weapon. It would not be an invasion of privacy since the software only tells you if they are carrying or not. Once you get a detection then it can take a picture of the suspect and the other AI cameras can track him until interception.

And that of course is the other thing: Officers would need to be supported by the CPS, Courts and establishment.
And at the moment the exact opposite is true.
