I am writing to you as you will have seen the ongoing media coverage about the recent inquest into the death of Awaab Ishak in his RBH home in 2020.
I want to start by saying how sorry we are for the loss of Awaab. We know our words will not take away the pain felt by his family, nor will they heal the hurt being felt here in Rochdale as well as across the country.
We know that we got things wrong, and we want to reassure you that our whole organisation is completely focussed on putting things right. I want to let you know about the actions we will be taking immediately.
We will:
Ask you about and check for damp, condensation, and mould on every visit to your home. Where there are cases of damp, condensation, or mould, we will report these immediately and arrange for any necessary work to be carried out as quickly as possible.
Make sure that all employees across the business complete further training on damp, mould, and condensation – including on the risk to health.
Roll out video technology that will help us to improve our communication with tenants and residents whose first language is not English.
Work with tenants to look at the information we provide on preventing damp, mould, and condensation. We are running two workshops, one in-person on the 6th December and another online on the 7th December. Visit our website page to find out more and to book your place.
We will bring in an experienced interim external Chief Executive as soon as possible to lead the organisation, and to introduce the changes that are needed.
We will continue to work with partners in the health, care and housing sectors, as well as with local and national government to implement the wider changes recommended by the Coroner, and we will keep you informed as we do.
Hope they have learnt lessons and impermanent the measures needed
