It looks like it needs to happen. Too many murders with them to ignore the danger.

Cars kill 31 people each week in the UK. Should they be banned?

Cars kill 31 people each week in the UK. Should they be banned? Yeah but though it’s not unknown for people to be mown down deliberately most are by accident whilst crossbow killing is almost 100% premeditated.

Cars kill 31 people each week in the UK. Should they be banned? Cars do have a useful purpose, even if there are too many of them and abuse and misuse sometimes happen regrettably. But in general their social benefits far outweigh the disadvantages.
Can you make the same argument for crossbows?

Cars kill 31 people each week in the UK. Should they be banned? It's illegal to drive cars on the roads without a licence and insurance. It's illegal to possess live firearms in common calibres without a licence. A licence isn't a ban, it's a control.

It's difficult to license something which is relatively easy to make. More people get stabbed every day than get shot with crossbows every year. The majority of stabbings involve common or garden kitchen knives. Perhaps we should ban home cooking.

They are very easy to make, but do you think that bastard crossbow killer made his own? We now have a Labour government, a licence system is inevitable, only hope for law abiding owners is to steer them towards a more benign form of licensing.

There are people who are members of target shooting clubs who use crossbows without hurting anyone.

They can be used for sporting purposes. Whether their social benefits outweigh the disadvantages I'm not sure, but I'm very wary of knee-jerk legislation to "cure" a problem, which impedes others freedoms.

Criminals ignore the law, which is why I'm against banning things since it only affects the rights and freedoms of the law abiding.

I think most of these people who commit atrocities like this are not only mentally ill but also either on medication that has side effects that tend to make them homicidal or on recreational drugs - or both. It'll be interesting to see what was the cause here.
