The Tories certainly earned this Labour landslide, didn't they? After putting the country through Brexit ostensibly in order to recover 'sovereignty', what did they improve? Nothing that I can see. As for Scotland, I'm reading that back in 1713, a bill was put before parliament calling for an end to the Union altogether. It was brought by three nobles, Erskine, Ogilvy and Campbell, who six years previously had been amongst the most committed to the Union. Only a single vote kept the Union alive. We went from being the seventh biggest exporter in the world to the fourth. True, but since the early 2000's, imports have consistently exceeded exports. In 2022, imports rose faster than exports.

We went from being the seventh biggest exporter in the world to the fourth. The UK needs to sustain and improve this performance. At the end of 2023/24 public sector net debt was £2.6 trillion — equivalent to every person in the UK owing £37,900. Let’s hope the UK’s new leadership can revitalise the economy for everyone’s benefit…
