I dont quite see what the point is - how are you going to hold them to account when they fail? (or perhaps that is the point). It's bad enough with great swathes of the public sector being hived off into unaccountable Quangos without making Ministerial appointments unaccountable as well. Don't they get a ''Lord'' title to go with the new job as they aren't MPs? Think that's how Mandy was able to be brought back by the previous Labour government edit Just looked Timpson up - he's the current boss of the key cutters and shoe reheelers Timpsons . Seems his only prisons ''experience'' is employing some ex inmates so it's a strange appointment imo A bottle of champagne plus the day off on your birthday; free breakfast before 9am and subsidised chef lunches; a £1,000 Weekly Lottery, a state of the art gym and free-to-use luxury holiday homes. Just some of the benefits of working for James Timpson OBE, the sixth generation leader of the family firm............. Could the bag of carrots approach advocated by Timpson get the UK back to work? He certainly thinks so. If you know anything about Timpson, which was founded in 1865, it will be that apart from getting the public out of key and shoe repair sticky wickets, they have a policy of employing ex-offenders; something that James pioneered after he became the chief executive in 2002. “People think everyone who works for Timpson has spent time in prison, but it’s really only one in nine,” he says.
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/02/james-timpson-secret-to-making-money-happy-index/Can't be that strange, after all an ex con employed as a locksmith, who'd a thunk it eh ??

and fails to recognise Parliamentary diversity at the top , Sunak's cabinet ticked many more boxes British voters elected the largest ever number of ethnic minority MPs to the House of Commons on Thursday, a reflection of more minorities becoming involved in politics as well as political parties seeking to reflect the people they represent. More than 13% of the new parliament come from an ethnic minority background, according to an analysis by the British Future think tank, an increase from 10% in 2019. More broadly, 18% of the British population belongs to a non-White ethnic group, according to 2021 census data. Yet while 66 out of 89 of these MPs will represent Labour, that same level of diversity hasn’t extended to Keir Starmer’s cabinet, many of whom were announced on Friday. The prime minister has so far appointed three cabinet ministers from an ethnic minority background: Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. Thangam Debbonaire was also expected to be part of the top team but failed to win her election campaign. That’s so far fewer than were in former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s cabinet and it is a smaller proportion of the larger diverse Parliament. Just one of them will hold a key post, in contrast to previous Conservative cabinets in which the most senior roles — the premier, chancellor, home secretary and foreign secretary — were all held by people from minority backgrounds for the first time, with at least two in those jobs since July 2019.

Who is going to get what job in the new cabinet? I suspect that most will keep the job they had in shadow cabinet, but there's at least a health secretary job up for grabs... Labour have revealed how they will solve the prison overcrowding problem, prisoners will be released. Starmer has appointed James Timpson [Timpson shoes] as Prisons Minister. This morning Mr Timpson said two thirds of prisoners should not be in prison. Releasing 50,000 prisoners will certainly solve the overcrowding problem. But what sort of a message will it send out to criminals? We are five minutes into this Labour government and they have already gone soft on crime.

The Labour cabinet is the most female and state educated cabinet in history: It's funny to think that it was 45 years ago that the Tories had a state educated women leader who became Prime Minister. Not exactly a lot of progress since...

It’s always interesting to see the early direction of travel of any new government of whatever colour. Are they to be mostly interested in tabloid headlines and political games or are they looking to make serious changes to make the country a better place. Cautious optimism here. The appointment of experts like Timson, Vallance and the new AG plus keeping shadow ministers who have learned their subject area suggests that this will be serious government. In respect of prisons, if we are finally to copy the Dutch example - send less minor offenders to prison, save lots of money, spend half of it on early intervention and probation and the rest on other government spending, reduce reoffending, reduce crime- that seems a very good start. Let’s see how things pan out.

This does not bode well for future crime figs. As you say, lets see how things pan out. You mention the new AG (Attorney General) I wonder why Starmer sacked Thornberry?

Some surprising non-MP appointments by Starmer. Richard Hermer KC becomes Attorney General. Sir Patrick Vallance becomes Minister for Science. James Timpson OBE becomes Minister for Prisons, Probation and Parole. Selecting people based on their knowledge and experience……… Absolutely 100% correct Take for example James Timpson OBE ... part of the famous Timpson Empire, and chain of shops which is well known for employing people who would otherwise find getting a job difficult. Ex offendors and people down on their luck, Timpson is former chairman of the Employers Forum for Reducing Re-offending (EFFRR). This is Progressive politics in action, not just punishing offendors, but making real attempts to seek out the causes and stop reoffending. As any Doctor would tell you, prevention is better than cure

I mean no great loss, but it might be interesting to know why.

If only he could sack Rayner, to be honest I can put up with Starmer, but Rayner really grinds my gears, and she's going to cause nothing but trouble for starmer.

Yes, they're politicians. ...or are they looking to make serious changes to make the country a better place... No, they're politicians. ...if we are finally to copy the Dutch example... If we followed the Dutch example, we'd also be telling Muslims to fuck off.
