THe byword of the ( hopefully ) outgoing Conservative government has been "Cuts" Posters state that they do not trust Starmer with our defence, yet our Army is now the smallest it has been since the Act Of Union. All our armed forces are now smaller due to 14 years of cuts, however the Royal Navy is probably more effective due to 2 new Capital Class Aircraft Carriers which were ordered by the last Labour government. Under Keir Starmer there will be more defence co-operation with Europe, of which most defence analysts agree is the right thing to do. Under Keir Starmer there will be a commitment to increasing Defence Spending, and a commitment to modernising our independent nuclear capability. Those will be the carriers that have spent more time in dock than at sea, and for which we have no native aircraft ..

It's interesting as 'past MI6 chief' bemoans Britain's relevance defense wise when floating thoughout Europe, all because of Brexit. I actually welcome this aspect of 'Little Britain' taking a back seat in 'policing' the world with our morals. We've seen throughout history that meddling in other nations' affairs usually ends in long-term acrimony.
We should be done with that charade. Iraq should have taught us that. Let some other mug throw their 'Western values' at the feet of sectarian bigots, warlords, authoritarians and what not. I for one welcome this 'Little Britain'. I second this. Time for some other nations (or the EU) to step up.

"Since I've left office and I've travelled around Europe, I am profoundly depressed. Nobody mentions the UK.
"We've just made ourselves irrelevant. And this is extraordinary," he says.
"At the beginning part of this century, we were the dominant force. France has effectively eclipsed that and, and we just, you just don't hear a discussion of us. And I think Brexit has marginalised us."
That's a good thing, Sir Alex. You utter dullard. 🙄

The problem with NATO
In an ideal world its our best and most realistic option of defence, just as it has been for 70 years.
But the REALLY BIG problem is the drift of (A) the US Republican Party, and (B) the potential threats to the United States, as compared to the potential threats to Europe, things have changed quite dramatically over the past 10 to 15 years, and they are evolving further.
The United States is now more concerned with its Western approaches, the Pacific, rather than the East towards Europe, and American interests around the Pacific rim are under threat, in South Korea, Japan, the Philipines and American territory throughout the region.
Many in the Republican Party want an end to funding and supplying Ukraine with weapons, material and cash, which would be a total abandonment of a free, democratic, Western friendly nation, and which would be seen by Putin as a signal for him to move on to the next victim.
Our threats are the same threats which France faces, and Germany, also Poland and the Baltic States, Scanda inavia and Central Europe, Mediterranian Europe, all our neighbours, our back yard.
By all means hang on to NATO in the hope that NATO survives, or that only Democrats stay in The White House, but defence co-operation with our neighbouring states is simply common sense, and an insurance policy against what could happen.

Agreed, this is a problem and Trump looks corrupt as fuck. Problem in the USA is Biden is scatty as fuck too. Both parties need better candidates. The rest of NATO need to re arm rapidly and excessively in all areas or we could be in a shooting war against Russia within a decade. Better to be too prepared than unprepared. Putin attacks the weak, not the strong.

The EU simply does not have the defence infrastructure to provide a credible alternative to NATO. Of course there is nothing stopping them creating such an infrastructure but that will take time and more importantly - money. So far there is no indication that the EU wishes to spend the time and money actually trying - you might get the odd European politician talking a good job but when it comes to the reality..

And a past MI6 chief says we’ve got ten years linkAnyway it looks like Steamer will be our next pm but do you trust him wit our defence,I don’t. Starmer is a pragmatist, rather than an ideologue. Also, let's remember, Army strength in 2010 was 102,000, which was reduced to 82,000 by the coalition govt and then further reduced to 72,500 by the Tories. Do you trust Tories with our defence? I don't. Oh no should’ve made that clear,no I don’t and they’re on their way out it seems.

I agree with those sentiments but that was never defence of the realm and whatever the ins or outs of the Ukraine conflict Putin is a danger to us and should we be targeted by nuclear weapons I have no confidence that Starmer would push the button in reply.
