In addition to being the driving force behind the EU's swingeing tariff surcharges on EVs manufactured in China - which become effective EU-wide from next week - France has now delivered a double whammy by making any such vehicles ineligible for Government-funded bonus payments to buyers.
In order to qualify for the bonus the manufacturer had to submit an environmental 'dossier' for each model focusing on the manufacturing process, energy consumption in production and shipping etc. No Chinese manufacturer took part in this process, although they were invited to do so.
Even Tesla has got stung, since its Model 3 (made in Shanghai) is ineligible while the Model Y (made in Berlin) was deemed eligible.
The full list can be found here
Other EU countries which offer EV bonus payments look likely to follow suit. But what about the UK?

The manufacturers and businesses in many small countries and those queued up to join BRICS must be laughing their socks off. They'll be able to benefit from the excellent Chinese electric trucks etc, at a very low price, thereby keeping their costs down and making themselves and their goods even more price competitive compared with European competitors.
Your struggling French family meanwhile, stuck inside the protectionist monolith of the EU, is also hit by a double whammy .... their Government piling on tariffs to prevent them buying a nice environmentally friendly Chinese car at a price they could have afforded, while having tax taken off them in order to be handed to those who can afford the even more expensive French offering.
The big interfering Government protectionist hell at work that we voted to rid ourselves from back in 2016. And reading accounts such as this one provided by Dan, underlines why the French people have increasingly got sick and tired of Macron. Let those who want to prop up the lazy inefficient old French car companies do so, and pay through the nose for their vehicles if they so wish, and let those who wish to take advantage of better offers from abroad and don't want to contribute their taxes to featherbedding inefficient French manufacturers who have been left behind in the modern world as regards certain products.
The French will only have themselves to blame if they subject themselves to more of this economic madness by leaving Macron at the helm, just as the British public will be able to repent at their leisure if they empower Sir Slippery to dismantle Brexit and encourage us back into a taxpayer funded EU protectionist mindset, while the rest of the world forges ahead without us.

The small countries benefitting from cheap Chinese electric trucks will be even more chuffed if the Chinese can provide cheap power generation as part of the package. South Africa, for example, nominal leader of the BRICS, has less generating capacity now than it had in the bad old days of Apartheid. Result:

As for French consumers, I wouldn't fret too much about them if I were you. They have plenty of choice of cheap EVs which are eligible for government bonus payments of up to € 7.000. All made in the EU, not just France.

The EU is nothing more than a fascist construct to serve Germany. It is Hitler's baby.
If EV's are the only means of travel I'll buy Chinese. For now, I'll stick to Ford. I don't need anything flashy.

I'm happy people have got it regarding this. It is economic suicide. The French really do have a 2 hour lunch break where they sip wine. Over in China you often see them take a half hour nap on their worktables. They are mega keen workers and work long hours. They want to better themselves and their families.
Oh and by the way, did you know that in the future 45% of the cost of an EV will be the chips. A modern car is said to contain about 3000 of them. The percentage of the cost of the car in chips has risen from about 18% in 2000. I never realised it was so much, but China is now making automotive chips at about 70 times cheaper. This was a European industry supplying many automotive chips because they are low density and easy to manufacture, except the cost of making them environmental-proof can mean lower production runs, but all the same, the EU chip industries were shaking down the customer something rotten. So the EV market is just as much about chip wars as it is batteries.

The French have got the work-life balance just about right. They don't have the drone-like mentality of the Chinese or the Anglo-American compulsion to keep up with the Jones's.

I don't need anything flashy. Any Ford ICE cars you can buy in the UK are made in the EU. Unless Transits are your thing, in which case they come from Turkey.
The handful of 'US-made' Fords sold in the UK/Europe are all EVs and all come from Mexico or China.

The French have got the work-life balance just about right. They don't have the drone-like mentality of the Chinese or the British compulsion to keep up with the Jones's. Well France, Britain and Holland have all been very rich in comparison to the world over the last 200 years or so. All this could come crashing down on them though. The thing is the UK has a way out if it works with China as a partner. It's the least worst option. China seems to like the Brits so this may work OK. It would mean we would have to work as hard as them and probably learn Chinese at school rather than French. I guess these things would be seen as minor compared to the prospect of looking like a part of Africa in 30 years having experienced hyper inflation and lost all the wealth. The principle reason for thinking this is to do with the relative rates of technological progress. Technological progress is linked to competition. We saw an example re the space race.

I think the French are doing quite well as far as technological progress is concerned. Certainly far better than the British.
They just don't make a fetish out of it and understand that other things in life are just as important, if not even more so.

I'll just have to shop around for something else next time or buy a Ford EV if I can't get a real car. I don't support rigged economies setup by fascists.

But you appear to be quite relaxed about buying something from China.

It's true that at the lower end of the consumer market there's very little alternative these days. But that doesn't apply to cars.
Cheapest EVs in the UK 2024:
Cheapest electric cars
Dacia Spring - £14,995 Citroen e-C3 - £21,990 Vauxhall Corsa Electric - £26,895 MG4 - £26,995 Mazda MX-30 - £27,995 Fiat 500e - £28,195 Nissan Leaf - £28,495 MINI Cooper - £30,000 BYD Dolphin - £30,195 MG ZS EV - £30,495
The Dacia, although a sub-brand of Renault, is actually made in China, as the MGs (2) and BYD. But six of the ten cheapest are made in the UK or Europe.

Just for interest; South Africa are hugely reliant (As are several other African countries) on coal fired power stations funded and built by China.
