The Open Library portal has been relying on a practice known as controlled digital lending, which allows libraries to lend a digitised title in place of a physical one in a controlled manner under fair use and fair sale doctrine. Only one person can borrow any given copy at a time for a limited period. Borrowers are not allowed to copy, retain or distribute the file. Facilitating access to books in this manner without permission from, or payment to, publishers or authors has been condemned as a “flagrant violation of copyright and authors’ rights”. |

The cost of lending a CD/DVD from a Library jumped up in recent years … I suppose related to the ease with which technology could ‘pirate’ and pass on such copy-right/intellectual property and make money … ie.defund the company/artist that footed the bills to produce it. I am currently working with some old music making software(1990’s) that requires a Manual to demystify it’s complexities … which I have … and have just scanned … and want to drop on the Internet Archive … (a service to other users wanting to revive these old computers to do new things )… Will the Internet Archive Admin do the research if it’s OK to put in Public Domain? … or do I have to get clearance/permissions first?? I understand this site is BLOCKED on certain UK ISP’s … and it looks like our current UK politicians are doing their utmost with new acts in 2014 to block more sites and turn the UK into an Orwellian State …. along current U.S. lines …. www.blocked.org.uk/We need to ALL VOTE REFORM …. and completely change the way Administrations suppress our FREEDOMS. |
