Young voters in key election battlegrounds are being recommended fake AI-generated videos featuring party leaders, misinformation, and clips littered with abusive comments, the BBC has found.
With TikTok emerging as a new social media battleground in this election, the political parties have begun a war of memes on the app in a bid to reach its audience of young voters.
But a BBC project to investigate the content promoted by social media algorithms has found - alongside funny montages - young people on TikTok are being exposed to misleading and divisive content.
It is being shared by everyone from students and political activists to comedians and anonymous bot-like accounts.
Videos which have racked up hundreds of thousands of views have promoted unfounded rumours that a major scandal prompted Rishi Sunak to call an early election and the baseless claim that Sir Keir Starmer was responsible for the failure to prosecute serial paedophile Jimmy Savile.
Satirical, fake AI-generated clips show Rishi Sunak declaring, “Please don’t vote us out, we would be proper gutted!” and making unevidenced claims about how the Conservative leader is spending public money - including how he will send his “mates loads of dosh”.
And the Gullible will fall for it

It is i think a tad ironic that my grand daughter, not quite 14, sees through this bull shite whilst her mum now 38 is often fooled by it and i myself have to sometimes pause and think
Maybe my grand daughter is unusually bright for her age
I suspect she like her friends are accustomed to being broadsided by this shyte and sees it for what it is

Fake stuff on the Internet is becoming very lifelike and dangerous. Some people are easily taken in. Not all technological advances are good.

It's not meant to be taken seriously. When I was at school we all fooled around and took the piss. Some of the things we did would no doubt horrify the fragile adult minds of today. As children though we could handle it. No one balled their eyes out over these things.

TicTok is banned in India, the Americans may well do the same, they have told people employed in Political positions or working within Government posts not to use it as they consider the Chinese owners are collecting huge amounts of data worldwide.
Some of the stupid so called games and dares on the App have resulted in the deaths of youngsters, or antisocial behaviour.
All similar providers allegedly do the same, my grandkids stay well away from it they don't trust it or need it

Facebook/Meta harvests data and has already been penalised for doing so without any consent and abusing their market power. To be honest, I think a lot of this comes down to abusing market powers and trying to drive out the competition. America, for example, likes to ban Chinese companies that compete with Meta, not just in social media but also standalone VR. Pico 4, which was actually superior tech compared to Meta's Quest 2, is unavailable in the USA, whilst Meta is flooding the world with their spyboxes. From what I can tell it was only Germany that challenged Meta. This isn't to say TicTok isn't a cock, but I would argue it's no worse or at least not considerably worse than the competition, which does influence politics.
