Rachel Reeves is accused of plotting a £20BILLION tax raid on pensions after denying Labour would increase VATWork and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride seized on a 2018 pamphlet written by the shadow chancellor in which she suggested tax relief on pension contributions paid by high earners 'could be restricted'. Mr Stride said it was evidence that Labour is 'coming after your workplace pensions'. [Hands up anyone who's surprised] He added: 'Having U-turned on their plans for a VAT increase, Labour face a £38.5billion black hole which they would have to fill with tax increases. 'Now we know Rachel Reeves' preference – another tax raid on pensions just like her mentor Gordon Brown's.' However, a Labour source insisted the ideas in the pamphlet are 'not policy and will not feature in our manifesto'. Treasury analysis of Labour's plans has identified a £38.5billion 'black hole', which would require the party to raise taxes. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13478473/Rachel-Reeves-tax-pension-Labour-increase-VAT.htmlStarmer and Reeves have publicly pledged that Labour will not raise income tax, however they refuse to make a similar pledge ref VAT, instead saying they have 'no plans' to raise it. [Until after the election]

And in other 'Labour fantasy' related news... Labour's green plan would beggar us allWith the election campaign just a week old, we have already seen a plethora of dubious assertions, backed by equally dubious statistics. Rachel Reeves' claim that putting VAT on private school fees would raise enough to fund 6,500 new state sector teachers springs immediately to mind. But for the sheer scale of self-delusion involved, nothing matches Labour's plan to 'make Britain a clean energy superpower', launched in Scotland yesterday. There was a sense of the absurd from the start when Sir Keir Starmer arrived to preach his carbon reduction sermon by gas-guzzling private jet. He appeared not to appreciate the irony. The claims made in the policy document are truly fantastic. Cut bills by £1,400 a year, 50,000 new jobs in Scotland alone, mass insulation, zero-carbon by 2030. The first step would be to create a new quango (because that always works), supported by a National Wealth Fund of up to £8.3billion. But as Sir Keir keeps telling us we have no national wealth, where will the money come from? Even trade unions expressed their disquiet. GMB chief Gary Smith describes the strategy as 'bad for investment, jobs and national security'. Unite says it is not 'viable' and urges Sir Keir to reconsider. www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-13482375/Labours-green-plan-beggar-all.htmlSo even Labour backers, their paymasters, are telling Starmer to reconsider his 'green dream'. Will he listen, or will he insist on showing the WEF, UN, COP, EU, OECD etc, that forcing us into fuel poverty is necessary for him to look virtuous on a global stage.

Will he listen, or will he insist on showing the WEF, UN, COP, EU, OECD etc, that forcing us into fuel poverty is necessary for him to look virtuous on a global stage. Yet another supposedly (sic) senior civil servant shows their true red colours in openly supporting Labour Sir Patrick Vallance , he of daily Covid tv OTT fearmongering fame, wants back in the limelight with his latest pronouncements Warning that the race to net zero should be treated with the same immediacy as the search for a Covid vaccine, he insisted: “I believe that one such priority is the urgent need to end the era of excessive carbon emissions, high energy bills and energy insecurity by accelerating the net-zero transition to clean, home-grown energy.” Accelerating? Labour has given itself just six years to end the electricity grid’s dependency on fossil fuels, all as part of a net-zero regime that we’d be lucky to survive without bankrupting Britain. And Sir Patrick wants it to happen more quickly? Appearing to criticise Tory plans to delay the implementation of some net-zero policies, he added: “If we choose to go slowly others will provide the answers and we will ultimately end up buying the solutions.” Following Sue Gray’s defection from the Cabinet Office to become Starmer’s chief of staff, we now see the true colours of yet another former civil servant. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/01/sir-patrick-vallance-covid-net-zero-fearmongering/

I think Vallance is trying to put himself in the frame as GB Energy CEO, but even before it's up and running the wheels are comming off Starmers flagship policy. It will apparently cost as many as 100,000 jobs in the oil and gas sectors and Labours race for 2030 will create genuine hardship for millions of people.

IMO he's simply showing himself up as stereotypical fearmongering , control freak lefty he portrayed an daily covid TV - did he also sit on the lefty control freak SAGE committee with the ''behaviour'' scientists like commie Susan Mitchie ?( can't remember and not sufficiently bothered to look it up) But I agree - he's still in civil service mode expecting a big paying quango job

As labour has already said the only change to tax will be what they have officially announced ie private schools sounds like the usual nonsense from the wail. If we are honest I think labour could actually justify some tax rises after the complete mess that the tories have made of the countries finances. I suspect they won’t however, if they just stop all the waste they should be on a winner.

Starmer and Reeves have both pledged that a future Labour government will not raise income tax. However, neither of them are willing to make the same pledge ref VAT, all they will say is, we have no plans to raise VAT. [Until they're in power]

Historically it’s the tories that raise VAT, it was 15% if I’m not mistaken at the 2010 election.

I believe you're fan of the €uro project. You criticise the nasty Tories for raising VAT in the past, do I assume you are hoping the Labour party will lower it? LOL...

Obviously I would prefer it to be lower but unfortunately after the complete balls up the tories have made of the economy I doubt it will be possible anytime soon.

Obviously I would prefer it to be lower but unfortunately after the complete balls up the tories have made of the economy I doubt it will be possible anytime soon. Thing is, if you're wealthy, in fact not even wealthy, if you're comfortable, VAT means nothing. VAT is a regressive tax that affects people with the least financial clout the most. Yet your hero's, Starmer and Reeves, refuse to say that a future Labour government will not raise VAT. They have both pledged that a future Labour government will not raise income tax, but they refuse to make any pledge about the most regressive tax, VAT. Why do you think that might be?..

I think you’re being deliberately obtuse. Reeves has said repeatedly there will be no tax rises needed other than the ones already set out.

In todays Mail
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said the Labour party would betray retirees as he warned of a repeat of 1997 when Gordon Brown targeted pensions.
The Conservatives highlighted that Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves has repeatedly said pensions tax relief should be restricted for the wealthiest.
While Labour has explicitly ruled out increasing taxes such as VAT, the party has said only that raiding pensions 'is not Labour policy and will not feature in our manifesto'.
The Tories say this leaves the door open to the party introducing the tax at another stage, for instance in an emergency budget. Mr Hunt told The Sunday Telegraph that voters will 'never forget' Mr Brown's £118 billion raid on pension funds.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said the party would betray retirees as he warned of a repeat of 1997 when Gordon Brown targeted pensions 'Labour betrayed pensioners before,' he said. 'We will never allow it to happen again. We are worried that, just as Labour did in the past when they have a black hole in their finances, they will go for back-door taxes on pensions.'
He made the comments as he vowed to protect retirement funds with a 'pensions tax guarantee' to prevent levies being raised or new ones introduced.
My opinion they will raid Private Pensions again, they will increase Taxes, as per usual Tax and spend, then Tax and spend some more
